So peoples, 'tis election year in New Zealand. The chattering classes on the talkback and YahooXtra forums are whipping themselves up into an even bigger frenzy of fear mongering ignorance over petty matters than usual. Last time I checked they were having a fevered discussion about banning the Haka from the Olympics to cries of "political correctness gone mad" and "angry mow-rees". They were also foaming in another thread about deporting pacific islanders in a sadly typical orgy of grammatically challenged bigotry and atrociously mispelled hate speech.
I really don't know why I bother frequenting such places. They cause me to draw frightening conclusions about human society involving blast proof bunkers, large electromagnetic pulses and ebola outbreaks in upper middle class subdivisions.
Meanwhile however, our two main political parties are momentarily distracted by a spying row. National (Tweedledum) is up in arms about leaked recordings of high ranking MPs making furtive, and in Bill English's case extremely pissed up comments about how they may spring a hidden agenda once in government, which wannabe PM John Key is blaming on Labour (Tweedledee).
This rankles with me in three ways.
1) Since 1984 at least, is anybody actually surprised over either party campaigning on a vague as fuck platform and then unleashing nasty surprises on us once in office, bought and paid for by their corporate overlords with a side order of petty social engineering and rank populism.
2) John Key is having a big cry about his rubbish having been gone through in heinous acts of espionage by his political enemies. Does he by any chance remember the fiasco during the Don Brash era of the National Party when they were found to be in bed with the Exclusive Brethren?
The shadowy and batshit insane fundamentalist christian cult, outraged by liberal social reforms, was campaigning on behalf of the Nats and also hired a private detective to follow the PM's husband around to prove he was a secret gay communist or some such other paranoid palaver.
Does he remember that at all?
I suppose he was away fishing at the time or something.
3) Was Bill English actually as thoroughly plastered as he sounded in the hissy secret recording or was it just a side-effect of his thick and barely comprehendable southern accent?
I shall finish with the following hilarity from
stuff.co.nz It emerged last night that frontbencher Nick Smith had also been caught on tape, and snippets were played on 3 News, but his comments will not embarrass the party. TV3 quoted the source saying he was not a member of any political party.
A furious Mr Smith said last night he was a victim of entrapment and that he could recall the man clearly. He remembered being pushed for his views on nuclear power "to the point where I thought he was a bit rude".
In hindsight Dr Smith realised the man could not have been a Young Nat - he was too "hip".
