Also - the locations mentioned are real locations, and yes that specific 7-Eleven is 2.9 miles from one of the precincts. I did a lot of staring at google maps trying to map out my thoughts, and Travis's age is based off how old Michael Ealy is since I'm not sure how old they are in the show. :|a
so....yeah. Onto the fill kthx!
Chapter 0
We understand death for the first time when he puts his hand upon one whom we love. - Madame de Stael

“Travis Marks, the LAPD Homicide Detective caught in the crossfire during last Wednesday's drive-by shooting, has died. Marks grew up in LA's Foster Care Network, leaving behind many family members that consider him one of their own as well as the friends he made on and off the force.
The shoot-out that left three others injured occurred just after 1:30pm Wednesday at the 7-Eleven off of Santa Monica and Virgil Avenue, and despite all attempts at resuscitation, Marks was concluded to be brain dead by staff members at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, making him the sole casualty. Detective Marks was 38.
In the wake of this tragedy, Police are looking for any information as to who may---”

Wes turned off the television in disgust. It seemed that no matter where he went, he couldn't escape the news about Travis's death. Over the television, radio, internet, even newspapers had it as a front page story.
He supposed it was inevitable. Travis had been one of LA's finest and touched many lives, but at the same time Wes just couldn't deal with this right now. Wouldn't deal with this. Not to mention Travis was still technically alive by way of machines until 7am tomorrow morning when they'd harvest his organs for transplant.
Brain Death. What a disgusting term doctors used to inform families that their loved one was alive thanks to advanced medical technology, but was very much dead all the same. Even the theory of Schrodinger’s cat didn't seem as complicated as this. The actual thought of it made him sick.
One bullet. One fucking bullet to the back of the head was all it took to shatter lives, and it happened not even three miles from the precinct - In the middle of the Lunch Hour Rush.
Travis Marks was dead, there was no way around that. And even five days after the shooting that took his life no one in Robbery-Homicide had made any progress. Zero suspects, Zero leads, and Zero headway - and here they called themselves cops. And despite the impressive arrest record he and Travis had racked up over the years, Sutton wouldn't put Wes on the case for good reason.
This wasn't a typical homicide case to Wesley Mitchell. This was personal, someone took his partner's life and there would be hell to pay. There was nothing Wes wanted more right now than to find the bastard responsible and throw every charge applicable at them and then some. Even if it meant staring death directly in the face.
He owed it to Travis, to give his families closure, to give himself closure. It'd be a cold day in Hell before he allowed this case to turn cold.
That's what partners were for, right?
