I find the batshit crazy of some SPN fangirls to be deeply amusing in an anthropological sort of way. Because I don't watch the show/am not in the fandom, I get to sit back and watch popcorn when insanity happens. (And ogle pics of whoever the damn hell I want, also known as EVERYONE.)
I'm protected from falling in love with the show by an overactive imagination, out-of-control fear response, and a huge tendency towards nightmares. So I basically lurk around, read some hot fic, and wander away again because I can't actually watch the show. But I have loved all three Winchester men in their other works!
Oh Gossip Girl. I need to catch up on like a season and a half of you. Just like every other damn show I used to watch. (Okay, I lie. I watched quite a bit of TV this semester. Probably because it was the only thing I had the time/energy to do to unwind between school and sleep.)
Tinkerbell. Time Lord. Vampire. Werewolf. Fox. Frog. Angel. Demon. Pick one. :-) Mass Majority Humanity is over-rated when wadding into fandoms.
You are perfectly right. I may not be into Supernatural, but I never understood the harm in liking the whole fandom. Sure, I had those characters I was pulling for that I related to the most, but it never crossed my mind to segment off sections of the show/movie/book/etc. because it appeared diametrically opposed to the parts I like.
It's just so arbitrary. You can't like this because of ... because of what? Nothing. I don't want to liken it to a lot of other things - but that's some sort of petty prejudice that I just don't want in my fandom.
It's arbitrary and illogical. Whatever you became a fan of, you became a fan because of the whole. Take away from the whole and you're left with something not whole.
Humans aren't built that way, after all. ;-)

And if you look at it from the outside - like I do fandoms like Gossip Girls - it is pretty hilarious.

And decisions made solely on emotions always equal bad physics.
