What the hell CSU paper!

First the "and some shit" thing now this! Perhaps I'm missing some back story but still. That is just a lazy editorial. I don't mind if he wants to critize the president or whatever. Jason seeing as you are in the "know" explain to me this ( Read more... )

Yeah, I couldn't get one of the scanner computers the day that came out. I'll take a picture with my phone when I get back home. I'm of the opinion that it was a stupid editorial and it's equally stupid how much press attention it's getting and it's even more stupid that people want him to resign over it. McSwain is pretty fucked, future journalistic career-wise, whether or not he resigns now.

I'm sure there are "those kids" in your classes who are all about this and blah blah free speech blah blah Democrats/Republicans. It wasn't the story that got me riled up but the comments on CNN from other readers. GRRRR! I wish he (the editor) had chosen something not quite so tired. "Eskimos are a sub-human race" would have been much better. Sadly it is very hard to provoke an audience in an original way. Well keep fighting the good fight on the radio. Maybe CNN will do a segment on the devil may care ways of a certain DJ?

I have little to go by, but has this guy been pushing the limit very often this semester?

I don't really want to push the boundaries or anything; the FCC tends to have problems with that. As far as McSwaine goes, I don't really know. Ever since I got bored with Sudoku, I don't really pick up the Collegian every day. I'm pretty sure it's been awfully similar to how it's always been up until the "and other shit" storm and some other thing that I don't really remember. Something about tasering a bush? Lately they've been posting full-pages of letters to the editor, half "FUCK YOU COLLEGIAN" half "haha, right on duuuude" and yet another half "I am ashamed to be in any way associated to these shenanigans."

As for Lobster Avenue, today's was really funny and it had me laughing disruptively in my Shakespeare class. Mario Kart jokes win me over, what can I say?

The dude should be fired, period. Regardless of how asinine his little "I'm-such-a-rebel" outburst was or not (it was), that dick move that cost the paper over 30,000 bucks in advertising. In ANY other business situation, he would've been cut immediately, no questions asked.

As for his "it's for the sake of free-speech" justification? Utter crap and a total cop-out. If you use a resource such as our University paper to make a statement that ill-planned and ignorant, it's not to show the value of the First Amendment, it simply an abuse of it.

Simply put, I'm really irritated to be affiliated with CSU right now. -Last I checked I'd enrolled as a Ram, not a Buffalo.

Fortunately the paper is only mildly affiliated with the school. So the fall of the paper doesn't really affect the school to much. It will be interesting to see what the editor does do, perhaps after Christmas. But yeah this is totally good publicity for CSU.

The paper affects the school in the outside-world sense- I've seen some pretty outrageous statements over this from employers now swearing off CSU grads and that they promise to convince colleagues to do the same if we're all so apparently not-educated.

And obviously the media attention has cast the school and its current students, and alum in a pretty bad light regardless.

I can't tell you how pissed I was after my dad caught word of it. He already dismisses my education as being so "liberal" and whatever else thanks to the general idiocy of most college-agers and some faculty, but now he has a specific CSU incident to point to...

That makes me...less than happy.

Am curious to see how this pans out though, and spiteful or not, I hope this kid never gets a job in journalism. Not that the field is real respectable anymore, but seriously- don't give this guy any more credit for his idiocy.

OK this is unrelated, but you need to:

Get This: http://dl.google.com/googletalk/googletalk-setup.exe
Add Me: wileyotis@gmail.com

and send me a message.

This is of the utmost importance, especially if you ever want to see your daughter again listen to a comedy album from a one Michael Ian Black.
