Which was why she was so utterly confused that new millenium, February morning, when Nate pulled into the driveway, whistling. Maggie and Sam waved to him from the front porch and he swept his tiny son up as soon as he was out of the car.
"Hey buddy," Nate said, hoisting him onto his hip. "How was Joey's birthday party? Did you have fun?"
Maggie watched with a smile as Sam chattered on in little kid-speak about the party and all the pretty streamers they had. Finally, Nate set him down and he ran in the house. "Hello," she murmured as he turned to her and rested one hand on her waist and the other on her neck.
"Hello," Nate murmured back against her lips, tipping her head back.
"I take it you caught your thief," Maggie smiled when he finally pulled back.
"No, this one was a little too slippery," Nate shook his head, although he looked decidedly un-put out by the fact.
"Mmm, well at least you got your art." Maggie shrugged, brushing her lips over his again as she leaned against one of the posts on the front porch.
"No, no, I'm afraid not," Nate sighed, "I couldn't prove anything and I couldn't even con my way into that safehouse. Careful thief. And good taste too."
Maggie blinked. Then just why are you so happy?
They didn't meet until over eight years later. Unsurprisingly, the 'careful thief' was conning her and everybody else and only Nate could see through it. He was half-drunk and wholly broken but when he looked at that woman, that dark-haired, beautiful Brit, Maggie saw the same look in his eyes she had seen for the first time one February morning.
