Harry was standing there, death grip on his geometry book, glowering.
“Uh, hey, Harry.” Zayn tried to be casual as he scanned the halls to see if anyone was watching them.
“Is it true?” Harry demanded.
“What?”
“That you asked Janet to prom.”
Zayn huffed. “Who told you that?”
“There’s been rumors since second period.” Harry informed him. “Is it true or not?”
“Uh…” Zayn wished for the first time ever that the bell would ring, signaling the beginning of his chemistry class.
“Well?!” Harry’s eyes narrowed to slits.
“Um, yeah,” Zayn’s gaze was everywhere except meeting Harry’s. “Listen, Harry, you’re a freshman. Janet’s a senior, and we’re both officers in the Drama Club. It makes sense that we go together.”
“More sense than going with your boyfriend?” Harry’s voice was way too loud for Zayn’s comfort.
“Whoa. I know we’ve been hanging out a lot and stuff, but, you know, we’re like, friends.”
“Do you always make out with your like, friends?”
That time some girls a few lockers down turned to stare.
Zayn pulled Harry around a corner so they were just inside the door of an empty classroom.
“I’ve been looking forward to prom since Valentine’s Day.” Harry lamented. “You said you would take me.”
“I did?” Zayn did remember that. In a moment of weakness and amid heated kisses, he had promised to invite Harry to the big dance.
Harry’s anger was quickly turning into hurt. “Were you just using me?”
“No!” Zayn protested.
Harry looked unconvinced. “You’re ashamed, aren’t you?”
Just then a couple jocks sauntered past the doorway. Instinctively, Zayn shrunk closer to the wall, and Harry exhaled forcefully.
“I should have known this would happen. All my friends said it would.” Harry turned to leave, but Zayn took hold of the other teenager’s arm.
“Listen, Harry, not everyone has supportive parents like you. It’s different with my family. There are…expectations.”
“You think it’s easy for any of us?” Harry blinked back tears and stood up as tall as he could. “You’re a coward.” He yanked himself out of Zayn’s grip and soon disappeared among the thrall of students.
Zayn sighed and stared at his shoes.
He knew in his head he’d done the right thing.
Convincing his heart he had would be another matter.
