Inside the Jaeger they're fighters, creatures of great skill with several Kaiju kills under their belts. Outside, they're a bit broken, carrying the burden of the past on their backs. Her parents death, his brother's last breath.

There are nights when Mako dreams of red shoes and chaos, her hand slipping from her father's. Raleigh can't erase the feeling of his brother dying from his memories. Their fall still present.

But there are days they spend together, and they talk and talk and never once do they let the memories take over. And when he kisses her there's only them, no threats, no danger. They fall asleep together cuddling in the middle of the bed, arms wrapped tight. Lips tracing the warm skin. And the past is a mere dark cloud because they've become victors of the present.
