"Riley is a boy," she reminded him.
"That's debatable." Christian laughed genuinely and shook his head, his lips quirked up in a smile. "His girlfriend," he explained. "She offered to surrogate - she knew how much me and Steve wanted a family and..." he trailed off, one shoulder shrugging as he dropped his gaze to the coffee mug his hands curled around. "And that's really it."
"I see..." Christian's mama trailed off thoughtfully, before reaching out and cuffing him hard round the back of the head. She ignored his outcry and took her own sip of coffee, watching him intently. "You maybe wanna try that again, Christian. And this time, tell me the truth."
Another sigh escaped Christian and he pinched the bridge of his nose. "Mama..." He looked up at the sound of the door opening; his face lighting up as Steve walked in, carrying Sarah in his arms. He took their daughter from him, cradling her against his chest.
"She looks like you," she said, meeting Christian's eyes. She looked at Steve and smiled softly. "Both of you," she continued, emphasising the word 'both' and watching as the tops of Steve's cheeks flushed pink.
An almost shy smile lit up Steve's face and, his eyes still on Christian's mama, he stepped up behind Christian and wrapped his arms around him. He rested his chin on Christian's shoulder, one hand resting against Sarah's head.
"She's beautiful," she encouraged, heart soaring at the grin that lit up on Christian's face.
Christian lifted his eyes, met his mama's gaze. "Thank you," he whispered, leaning back against Steve's chest. "She's ours," he said, confirming what she already knew. "Sarah... she's me and Steve's lil girl."
