It's good to see you, bao bei, Merlin/Firefly, companion!Merlin/InaraentropynchaosMay 16 2009, 08:20:22 UTC
He walks into the ballroom on Arthur's arm - they're just here for reconnaisance...and to annoy Arthur's father - and Merlin feels his shoulders tense up as the announcers say their names and they walk through the door and down the couple of steps to the room proper. He always hated this part of being a companion - they're trained for different liasions, some for sex, some for companionship, some merely for their ability to look good on someone's arm...and Merlin had always been terrified he'd make some huge mistake, even with the years of training that had been put into making him one of the most successful companions in the school.
Because no one ever expected Arthur Pendragon to show up to the event with a companion on his arm, let alone a male one, and there are stares and there are whispers, and Merlin tightens his grip on Arthur's sleeve - feels Arthur straighten just a little bit more in reaction, feels Arthur walk just a little closer to him. It's reassuring, and Merlin does his best to calm down. They're here for a reason, after all - here to get news of one of the border planets under the domain of a sir or a lord attending the party...a border planet that's being attacked frequently by Reavers, and Arthur and Merlin and the entire crew of the Dragon know there's no way Mercia can hold out for much longer.
So Merlin smiles and keeps his fear behind his serene companion's mask, and he's witty and charming and everything Arthur's only ever seen glimpses of. Oh, yeah. That conversation's going to be fun when they get back to the ship.
And a light hand touches the arm on his other side and Merlin turns with an automatic smile on his face that becomes a real grin when he sees who it is.
"Inara Sera," he says, letting go of Arthur so he can bow properly. "It's wonderful to see you again, jei jei."
"And it's good to see you, bao bei," Inara smiles, and Merlin leans in to press a kiss to her lightly powdered, lightly perfumed cheek. "And who is your delightful partner this evening?"
Of course Inara knows who Arthur is - Merlin would be surprised to find anyone here who didn't know the only son of Uther Pendragon by name if not by sight - but his jei jei was the one who taught both he and Morgana their lessons when they'd been barely more than children, and Merlin grins irrepressibly. Looks like 'Nara will never stop mothering him.
"Of course, how could I have mis-stepped so?" and Inara narrows her eyes at him, the corner of her mouth twitching as she fights the urge to laugh as Merlin turns to gather Arthur to him - not that Arthur needs to be gathered; he's right there, barely more than an inch from Merlin's side, and Merlin hides the roll of his eyes. Possessive hwun dan. "Inara Serra, may I have the honour of introducing Lord Arthur Pendragon? Arthur," he says, resting his hand on Arthur's arm, "this is Inara Serra."
"It's a pleasure to meet you," Arthur says, smiling and bending low over Inara's hand. "Merlin and Morgana both speak very highly of you."
Inara smiles prettily and she tips a discrete nod to Merlin. Well, at least now both of his jei jeis think well of the choice he's made, and Merlin feels his over-anxious mind and stomach settle a little further.

(I'm not really awake. You don't see me... hehehe)
This is adorable lovely. Possibly my favorite so far - it's such a gorgeous peek inside Merlin's head. And the interaction with Inara is perfect. I'm sure she's seeing the similarities to Mal...
