Castiel watches the taller Winchester sneak out of the hotel room and immediately knows where the young man is headed.
He'd fought against the orders, of course. The whole point of the human creation had been to grant them free choice. Manipulating them seemed to dishonour his father somehow.
But this was a war, and Castiel was just cog in the figurative wheel.
He followed the young Winchester on principle. It was his fault for not telling Dean that Sam's gifts were gifts; that if he used them - Hell could be defeated. He hadn't spoken up, and he took it upon himself to keep Sam safe.
Instead, he allowed Uriel to poison Dean's mind; allowed Dean to lash out at Sam.
And watched as that very thing drove Sam farther into Ruby's clutches.
As she rode the young Winchester inside the hotel room, her eyes lifted to Castiel's. She smiled at him for a moment, shared knowledge.
For now, she could have him. But she knew she was just helping turn Sam into a tool for Heaven.
