Just like he can't put off the day when Liv will finally have had too much. When one victim too many will tug at her heartstrings till they break, and she will be a shadow of the person and officer she was before.
A shadow like John, who sinks more and more into the background every day. Cragen thinks of the man he met fresh out of Baltimore, the cynical, bitter man, ready to try something with living people this time, maybe give his life a bit more poignancy. Most people seem to get sharper and harsher with age; Munch gets worn down flat.
Finn bottles it all up. What can Cragen tell him? Sure, take it out on my best detective, why not? Divide the squad room, break down the already broken team. Anything to make yourself less angry.
They pass by his office every day, broken people trying to put back together stranger's lives. And what can he do to help them?
A sounding board, a support system, a guiding hand, and a piece of licorice from the tub on the desk. Some days that's all you have to give.
