It became a recurring trend with the two of the over the next few year. Steve would tell Christian he loved him. Sometimes when Chris didn’t respond, Steve would leave. Most of the time he stayed because as much as it hurt that Chris couldn’t say it Steve loved him anyway.
The last time Steve walked out because Chris didn’t say the three little words was when they’d been together for almost 7 years. In those 7 years, he could count on his fingers the number of times Christian had told him that he loved him.
He didn’t think walking out that last time would change anything between the two of them. It had. It was like some kind of light bulb went off in Christian’s head that told him he was going to lose Steve for good if he didn’t figure out how to say it.
Christian wasn’t going to let that happen because he did love Steve, It just seemed like every time he started to say I love you, the words got caught in his throat and he couldn’t get them to come out no matter how hard he tried. But he knew for Steve he was going to have to try harder because they’d been together a long time and Steve deserved more, Steve deserved better. So Christian would be better. He would learn to say I love you. No matter how hard it was, it was worth it to see the grin on Steve’s face when he did manage to get the words out.
