One thing Cedric Diggory had never, ever, ever told anyone, not even his Mum, was that he understood snakes. He could speak Parseltongue. And he could hear when people around him spoke it as well, understood what they were saying. In Diagon Alley once, he was in the Owl Emporium looking at pets, and he saw a girl, dark-haired, green-eyed, speaking to a snake. He'd heard her cooing at it, telling it it was pretty. But the other customers had recoiled sharply from her, and her mum - a witch in tattered black robes - had dragged her from the shop, shouting at her, and Cedric's mum had shaken her head and told him that Parseltongue was dark, was evil. Belonged to Slytherin House and the followers of He Who Must Not Be Named.

So when Cedric sat on a stool in front of the Great Hall at Hogwarts, Professor McGonagall placed the Sorting Hat on his head.

"Parseltongue, eh, lad? You know what that means."

Not Slytherin, not Slytherin, Cedric thought desperately, because he didn't want his mum to hate him, to think he was evil ( ... )

Ooh, I like it! The parallels to Harry's experience are really interesting. He could easily have been the chosen one.
