Henry summoned Thomas Cromwell to his chamber. Things were not going as he had intended. His wife, Anne, had just given birth to her second child, a girl. He had needed another son. His first born son and heir was sickly; few believed he would see out the year. And Jane Seymour grew increasingly attractive.

Henry needed Cromwell to promote the rumours of Anne’s infidelity. Cromwell knew just who to say an injudicious word to. Then, when the boy died, the death could be claimed as punishment from God; Anne could be executed and everyone knew infant mortality was high.
