Jayne wasn't an honorable man.
He'd seen a lot of honorable men die. He'd killed more than a few of them himself. There wasn't any profit in being honorable.
Jayne wasn't a courageous man.
He'd seen a lot of them die too. Often times they were harder to kill, but in the end, they died just the same.
The job in question went to shit fast. They were outnumbered four to one. The smart decision would have been to run and leave the others to it.
After the shooting was over and everybody was back on board, Kaylee told him it had taken courage to stick by Zoe and the captain against such odds.
“It wasn't courage,” he told her, it was greed. He wanted to get paid. Simple as that.
But that was a lie too. Or at least it wasn't the whole truth. The money was definitely part of the equation, but back in his bunk, staring at the ceiling, he knew the score wasn't big enough to stick around.
It wasn't courage. It wasn't even any real desire to win. It was just pure, bloody-minded stubbornness and a refusal to sit back down.
Because, in this world, you either stood up and took what you wanted, or you sat down and watched others take it instead. And once you sat down, it was damn hard to get back up. He knew he wasn't the smartest guy around, but it didn't take a genius to know sooner or later fate, or a bullet, would catch up to him. He just wanted to make sure he was standing up when it happened, not sitting down watching it come.

I actually like this one whole hell of a lot, despite having only seen Firefly the once. Jayne is pretty much the perfect character for that quote, isn't he?

I'm glad you liked it. I saw the prompt and the first line popped in my head. Didn't know where it was going at the time, but I knew it was going to be about Jayne.
