Arthur wasn't a good soldier because he had to trust a man before he'd obey him and he had to agree with orders before he'd follow them. He's a much better criminal - an island unto himself with no one demanding him to be anything else. As a point man, he basically gets paid to disagree with his bosses, to point out errors and discrepancies that others have missed. In illicit extraction, he is the rule rather than the exception. Nobody trusts anybody, and Arthur's just fine with that.

Until Eames. Because Eames can't leave anything alone. They can't just work together and be friends; they can't just be friends with benefits or even sometimes lovers...

Eames won't stop pushing Arthur until they're bandying about four letter words and one of those words just happens to resemble 'war' much more closely than Arthur cares for.

"Love is not war, Arthur," Eames tells him. "In war, there is generally a victor... And everyone who loves wins and loses something eventually."

This is the most profound statement that Eames has ever made in Arthur's presence.

"Also, if we didn't love one another, you'd probably hit me, instead of just looking as if you'd like to, when I take the piss out of you, and I'd probably have fucked around by now," Eames continues, which is a bit more like him.
