Jensen trudged wearily down the walk and entered through the front door. His shoes were kicked off immediately to land somewhere against the wall with soft thuds. His jacket dropped to the floor at his feet before the door had even finished closing.

It was completely dark and silent in the house. All the shades were drawn and all the lights off.

That was weird. Jared had phoned earlier to confirm that Jensen was finally on his way home from a late shift at the office. Jensen had likewise confirmed that he would not need to pick up anything for dinner. Jensen had pouted for a little while at that - he was really craving a birthday meal of Kung Pao Shrimp. He firmly believed a bunch of candles stuck in a bed of fried rice with noodles were as good if not better than any cake or ice cream combination. Of course, Jared vehemently disagreed. But Jared could have cake on *his* birthday.

“Jared,” he called down the darkened hallway, stretching and yawning away the last of the day’s stresses.

“In here.” Jared’s voice drifted from somewhere in the back of the house.

Dropping his arms, Jensen flipped the switch to the hall light a few times, but nothing happened.

“Something’s wrong with the lights!”

“Yeah, uh, power’s out! Now get down here!”

Jensen snorted and rolled his eyes while loosening his tie. “Did you call the power company?” His eyes slowly adjusted enough for him to creep forward, one hand in front of him just in case. His clothes were discarded in a trail behind him until he was just in socks and slacks.

“Yes!”

Fumbling down the hall, cursing as he stubbed his toe on a corner, Jensen found the kitchen by accident. A huge load of empty delivery bags sat on the counter. Jensen’s lips quirked up as his exhausted brain deduced that Jared had ordered a few extra big helpings of fried rangoon. But no Jared here. Or dogs, come to think of it.

“Where are you?”

Jared didn’t answer this time.

Sighing in exasperation, Jensen finally saw a faint glow coming from the living room. Jared was splayed out on the couch. Across from him on the coffee table sat a slice of cake with two lit "3" candles stuck carefully on top.

Jensen stood casually in the doorway and unbuttoned his pants. “Thought I said I didn’t want cake?”

“Well, you got it anyway,” Jared replied. “Whoa!”

Jensen fell into his boyfriend’s lap and snuggled close, thighs on either side of Jared’s hips. He pressed his lips against Jared’s and slowly, gently forced his tongue into the other’s mouth. Jared’s hands fluttered along Jensen’s bare back, both pushing him away and gripping his waist closer.

“Oh,” Jared said breaking the kiss. “You might want to stop - urgh.” Jensen sucked mischievously on one ear lobe, tongue tracing the edge. He ignored Jared’s fidgeting and worked one hand under his T-shirt to smooth along a muscled chest and pinch one nipple, and the other moved downwards to loosen his jeans.

“Jensen,” Jared whined, pulling both of his hands out and away before Jensen wrestled them back into a loose hug.

“Nuh-uh. Been waiting for this all day,” he murmured against Jared’s neck where he was busy laying soft kisses against what exposed skin he could reach. “Just you, me, and the couch.”

A groan that was definitely too high pitched to be Jared sounded a few feet away.

Jensen froze.

A strange cough-scrape-shush sound came from somewhere behind them. The hairs on the back of Jensen’s neck stood up.

“Jay?”

“Oh, for God’s sake, now,” someone in a far corner of the room hissed.

“SURPRISE!” Suddenly, every light burst on and illuminated a room covered floor to ceiling with neon pink and green streamers and a giant crowd of friends and family cheering, whistling, and clapping wildly.

“Jesus Christ!” Jensen shrieked and tumbled to the floor. Somewhere, a bunch of flash bulbs went off.

He lay in an awkward pile of limbs, breathing heavily and clutching the carpet as what seemed like every person he’d ever met stood over him and laughed. More came pouring in from the main hall and out of closets. Someone, somewhere, had turned on a stereo that was playing a rousing, obnoxious, chipmunk version of “Happy Birthday.”

Jensen will never admit to the girly yelp he let out at the sight, but over thirty people witnessed him locking himself in the bathroom.

He stood trembling in shock, in the dark since the lights didn’t work in here either, as multiple voices outside murmured amongst themselves before falling silent.

“Jensen?” Jared knocked timidly at the door. “C’mon, open up.” Jensen sullenly pushed the release on the lock.

A few seconds later, Jared edged open the door and poked his head in.

Jensen pinned Jared with a wide-eyed glare. He reached over and dragged Jared into the bathroom by his T-shirt collar, shutting the door firmly behind him.

“I hate you,” he growled. Jared choked as Jensen’s grip on his collar tightened. “I hate you. I hate you. I really fucking hate you, and if you don’t put your goddamn ape arms around me for a hug I will rip them off at your goddamn shoulders. Then I will CRY. Do you want to be the jackass who made me CRY on my BIRTHDAY?!”

“I’m so sorry, babe,” Jared managed to say between giggles.

Jensen punched his shoulder, but Jared gathered him up into a tight hug. Jensen buried his burning face into Jared’s chest.

“I hope you die in a fire.” His words were muffled but carried well enough.

“No you don’t.”

“I will start the fire! With one of the 33 candles I saw on that *giant cake*.”

“There’s also a ton of Chinese food…”

Jensen shuddered and held tighter. “I loathe you entirely.”

“I don’t loathe you,” Jared announced. “I love you so much.” He leaned down and placed a giant wet kiss on Jensen’s head. “So very much! Want to know how much?”

“How much,” Jensen grumbled.

“I got you a big ass ice cream cake! Best of both worlds. And a band. And balloons. And party hats. And a clown. Who does *magic*.” Each statement was punctuated with a kiss on the head.

Jensen cringed. “Is there really a clown?”

“No,” Jared capitulated. “But I got you something better.”

“What’s that?”

“Your shirt.”

“You fucker.”

Jared laughed as Jensen fought to push away. When they finally both calmed down he asked, “You ready to go out there now? They need a birthday boy…”

“Yeah, let me just wash the Yeti slobber out of my hair.” Jared scoffed and reached over their heads. He tightened the bulb in the ceiling light. Both were blinded temporarily as it came on. His fingers combed Jensen’s hair back into order then cupped his jaw. Jensen scowled and turned to the mirror.

Jared sighed. “I thought you’d like it.”

“I still want cuddles,” Jensen said after a moment.

“That wasn’t cuddles out there,” Jared snickered. “But I’ll make it up to you later, baby.”

When they made to leave, Jensen finally reached over and gave Jared a quick peck on the cheek.

“I maybe kinda like you. But next time you throw me a surprise party, tell me!”
