summary; in a wild, unguarded moment, merlin beats arthur in a swordfight. somehow they end up frolicking in front of the knights.

a/n; unashamed, self-indulgent fluff

Arthur doesn’t see it coming. Before he knows it, Merlin’s sword had sent his own weapon skidding across the grass and Merlin kicks him in his shins and Arthur falls back, defenceless.

Merlin stands over him, too stunned at his victory and Arthur stares back up at him, just as stunned. The knights watching have all gone very silent, all the laughter from before has died out. For a moment, everyone just stares.

Then Merlin rests the tip of the blade under Arthur’s chin and asks, “Do you submit, Arthur?” and Gwaine bursts out laughing followed by hesitant laughter from the other knights. Lancelot is the only one who keeps a respectful, straight face.

Merlin grins down at him and offers him a hand. Arthur grudgingly takes it and Merlin brushes grass off his armour when he stands.

“How the hell did you do that?” Arthur asks his cheeks red from embarrassment at having been defeated by Merlin of all people.

Merlin laughs and shrugs. “I don’t know I just...”

“Have you been practicing?”

“No.”

“Are you sure? Because that was...”

“I was good, wasn’t I?” Merlin asks, proud.

“No,” Arthur scoffs. “I was just going easy on you.” Merlin smiles knowingly at him and Arthur punches him in the arm, grinning. “Oh you just got lucky.”

“Sure.” Merlin replies, grinning widely. “Lucky...” he drags the word teasingly and when Arthur moves to punch him again, he breaks into a run.

Dropping his helmet on the ground, Arthur chases after him, much to the delight of the knights watching. He’s too fast for him and eventually both of them end up rolling on the ground. Arthur pins Merlin’s arms above his head and grins down at him.

“Kiss him!” someone shouts, it’s probably Gwaine.

Arthur’s about to turn back and tell him to keep his brilliant ideas to himself when Merlin laughs beneath him, tugs his head down and kisses him. It’s soft and chaste and Merlin’s grinning too much but it’s enough to make Arthur’s grip on Merlin’s wrist to slacken and Merlin flips them, settling over the bulk of Arthur’s armour.

The knights are roaring with laughter now and Arthur can’t seem to care. He pulls Merlin’s head down once again and kisses him in earnest. Merlin lets out a surprised ‘oomph’ and Arthur uses it to his advantage and rolls them over so that he’s once more on top.

Merlin bites his lip, Arthur sucks his tongue, Merlin tugs at his hair, Arthur rolls their hips together...

They tumble around the grass for what seems like hours until someone has the sense to break them up. A firm pair of arms grab him by the shoulders and hoist him off Merlin.

It’s Gwaine.

“Get a room, princess.” He says.
