I've been listening to some really great music lately, which I thought I'd recommend:
1. Congotronics 2 - V/A - This is a compilation of bands from Kinshasa, released by the people who brought Konono No. 1 to international (European/North American) attention. Nine tracks by nine bands, and at least 3 of them are house-flatteningly good.

2. Yeah, I knew that "kids these days" all want to sound like Gang of Four, but I don't know who decided that - the bands themselves or the unimaginative illiterate music press - because they sure don't sound a damn thing like it.
3. I agree about Phrenology. Lots of people didn't like it, but I don't know why. It was brilliant, I think. The Tipping Point should have been an EP. There were a few songs I liked a lot, but that was about 4 of them. OMG - how about the part of Dave Chappelle's Block Party where the Roots are doing that song off The Tipping Point where Black Thought mimics Big Daddy Kane, and then woah, Big Daddy Kane comes out to rap it himself. Pretty cool.
Okay, I have to plead ignorance on Satyricon, Enslaved, and Tussle. But if they're good metal then I want to hear about it.

2. I know that it's true, but I find it hard to believe that the Au Pairs and Delta 5 were considered inconsequential. I think that riot grrrl helped bring them back.
I might have to investigate Enslaved and Satyricon.

2. Oh yeah, I don't mean sonically. I mean that as a result of Riot Grrrl people were talking about Au Pairs/Raincoats/Slits/Delta 5, and some people were going and listening to them too. Either because the bands were overtly discussed by Riot Grrrl zines/bands/people, or because people drew parallels.
In an even more indirect way, I think Nirvana had something to do with it too. I can't really point to anything in particular, but I think that Cobain name dropped the Raincoats somewhere.
