#134 - "People think we lead lives of glamour and romance, but we're really lonely - terribly lonely."
It was there, always there, underneath the wide smile, the excitement of showing her some place new, or the joy of adventure. It was more prevalent in his other incarnation, the one that was closer to the Last Great Time War but he still had it. That look of pain and loneliness that she could see deep in his eyes no matter what.
That man that she'd met when she'd first looked up the Doctor. The one that was studying him. He'd said the Doctor's constant companion was death, but he was wrong, it was loneliness. She knew that she helped with that. At least she hoped that she'd taken away some of it. Rose figured that as long as his people were gone, it would always be present. Rose sometimes wondered what he was like before the war. Did he have that loneliness when he was traveling about the galaxy with Sarah Jane and the others? Or was he lonely then, too away from his planet and people?
Running, he was always running. She'd thought, at first, that he was running toward the thrill of whatever was around the next corner. It probably was that in the beginning but after time, she thought, that he was more likely running from himself. When she'd told him that his life was better with two, it had been a flippant remark and her way of telling him that he wasn't going to get rid of her easily. Rose hadn't realized when it had become the cornerstone of her wish for him, but it had. While he was traveling to other planets, going to dates that were dead and passed, Rose wanted to know that he wasn't by himself, that he had someone with him.
She'd watched the TARDIS fade away with him and Donna inside and the other Doctor's hand in hers. That reassuring grasp telling her that everything would be all right until he'd softly told her about Donna. Letting her know what the Doctor would have to do in order to keep her alive. Rose felt pain for Donna, everything that she'd lose, but deeper was the pain of thinking of him being on his own again. She hoped that he'd pick up another companion, someone to ease the loneliness inside and to show him the joy of discovery in new things again.
