In which Sam needs to refuel.

Sam pulled the Impala to a stop in front of what seemed, by all instances, to be the local coffee place. Smallville, Kansas, was looking to be the next stop on the road to nowhere as oppose to the road to Lilith, but Sam wasn't about to tell Ruby that. She'd just give him some snap statement about who was the Lilith expert here, him or her, and ( Read more... )

Breaking it off with Clark had been hard, but she did it. Staying put instead of running away like she had so many times was hard, but she did that too. Something had to give, though, and that thing was ISIS. Lana couldn't handle the stress of working with the meteor-infected when she was busy just trying to hold herself together. Hopefully, when she was more stable, she could open the place up again, maybe actually help someone this time ( ... )

Sam looked over at her, and gave her a half a smile -- about as much as he could manage at this point -- before looking over the board again. "Tall coffee, black, two sugar." He didn't know when he had started drinking Dean's coffee, but it sobered him up better than his usual choice would. He ordered a muffin to go with it, just something to snack on, before turning back to her with a bit of a frown.

"You don't happen to sell French fries here, do you?"

"I'm afraid not," she answered as she went to work. "Pies and muffins, mostly." It wasn't long before his order was in front of him. "Passing through?"

Of course that much was obvious. Lana knew pretty much everyone who ever came through the doors. Just--she couldn't exactly think of anything else to say, and she felt like she should be saying something.

"Yeah," he said with a bit of a nod as he took his food, taking a sip of his coffee. "Got some business to take care of, and then we'll probably move on to the next town."

If he lived through it. If he managed to survive killing Lilith, but if he did, he had no idea where he would be going. There was nothing left for him after that, nothing for him to look forward to. Dean was gone, and once his death was avenged -- Sam couldn't help but find himself hoping that he would go down with her. At least then, he and Dean would be together again, even if it was in Hell.

"Just was trying to figure out where the good food was in the area." He popped a piece of the muffin into his mouth as to accentuate that fact. "I thought that maybe here might be good, but my -- " Lover? Girlfriend? Partner? " -- friend as a little obsessive about her French fries."

She nodded, a little disappointed to here the feminine pronoun, even if it seemed he wasn't sure how to refer to her. "It shouldn't be too hard to find a place. I'd make a suggestion, but fries aren't really my thing."

Lana watched him as closely as she'd allow herself. She could tell just by looking at him that he was in a lot of pain, and despite the trouble her curiosity always seemed to lead her to, she wanted to know why.

"You said you had business here. What was it?"

Sam could have told her the truth, but habit kicked in before anything else. "I'm writing a book, on spots where weird unexplained things have happened. Smallville came up in a few searches I did, so I figured I'd come down here and check it out."

It was easier to lie. Everything was easier with a lie.

The story was believable enough, so she bought it. It wouldn't be the first time a writer had found their way here, and certainly not the last.

It amused her, though. "I think you'll be here for a while. You could write a whole book just on Smallville."

"That's what I've been finding." And with that, he managed about half a grin. "Can't say I've been a town who's had nearly as many weird occurances."

She glanced over his shoulder for a second, and seeing as no one was waiting, she pulled up the stool that was behind the bar and took a seat in front of him. "And you're just going on the ones that have been documented."

Sam raised an eyebrow slightly as he chewed on his muffin, looking at her curiously. "You know about more than what was documented?"

She was quiet for a moment, her mind wandering to Clark. Nice move, Lana. Perk his curiosity.

"Unfortunately."

A witness without even trying? This was shaping up to be one of the better decisions he's made lately. He could tell by the look on her face, however, that it was a sensitive subject. He took another sip of his coffee, before seeing if he could find the sensitive response to this. The longer Dean was dead, the harder these things seemed to get, but he could find it here.

"Look, if you don't mind, I'd love to talk with you about it. A first person perspective would be really great for my book."

She looked down a bit as she thought it over. There were a lot of things he could ask about, and she wasn't sure she was ready to just give up those answers to a complete stranger, even if he was as nice as he seemed. Not to mention gorgeous.

She bit her lip. "I'll try to answer any questions as honestly as I can, but there are some things...I just can't."

"No, that's fine," Sam replied. I wouldn't ask for anything more than what you could give." He glanced down at his watch for a moment. He had to meet Ruby, and he was sure she had work to do, but if they could make plans for later.

"There's something I have to take care of, but I'm free later tonight, if you're interested in getting together to talk? I don't have my writing supplies with me right now."

She nodded before grabbing a pen and notepad and jotting down her name and cell number. "Just give me a call whenever you're ready." She gave a weak, almost sad grin as she slid the paper to him. "Not like I have a lot to do."

He nodded and took the paper from her, glancing down at the paper and catching her name, before extending his hand to her. "It's nice to meet you, Lana. I'm Sam."
