Mike sat on the ledge of the fire escape and swung his long legs over the railing allowing his shoulders to slump. Billie was able to get a good view of him and noticed how sunken his face had become over the year of his disappearance; his eyes were hallowed and surrounded by dark circles. It showed how much sleep he had lost as he thought out all the possibilities that could have happened to him. Soon after he got up and went inside of the apartment and curled into his bed, pulling his long legs up toward his torso. Billie climbed back onto the porch and watched him as he drifted into an uneasy sleep, shifting once and a while and letting out pained groans.
After a couple of hours Billie nervously crept to the open window as a small wind blew, allowing Mike’s scent to surround him. He quietly slunk into the room and stood at the edge of the bed Mike was sleeping, he listened to the sound of his blood pulsing in his veins the beating of his heart. He sat silent watching the bassist toss and turn, sweat beading on his forehead and his body trembling once and a while. Billie carefully laid his hand onto Mike’s outstretched palm. He let it rest there, feeling the pulse threw the soft flesh. Mike’s hand closed gripping the singer and he whimpered in his slumber. Billie looked at the other boy terrified as he shifted more.
He managed to get his hand away causing the blonde man to frown and roll back onto his back, Billie sighed silently as he watched him. ‘I can’t imagine doing this until he’s... ’ he couldn’t bring himself to think it as the sun began to shine through the curtain. He leaned forward and pressed his lips softly to Mike’s, whose lips trembled as the cold touched them. He pulled back quickly only giving the bassist one more look before disappearing through the window.
Mike sat up suddenly his fingers pressing to his lips, looking around the room and fixing on the open window. “Billie…” he said softly as his hand moved from his face and back to the comforter. He stood and walked to the window and looked out at the sun coming through the clouds, Billie leaned against the warming bricks and stared out at the sunrise; the thin rays leaving strips of sparkles on his skin. As Billie turned to jump from the fire escape he heard Mike’s voice say in a soft sad whisper, “I miss you Billie Joe.”

It was hard to think of anything but seeing Mike again as he came within a couple of miles from the Cullen house, knowing he would have to pick a strong memory to hide his encounter from Edward. He didn’t know the true distance Edward could pick up his thoughts, and then it occurred to him how frustrated he was about his power. ‘There easy enough’ Billie grinned as he took off like a bullet through the early night air. He just didn’t understand why he could be surrounded with vampires who could read minds see the future and control emotion and all he could do was make his mortal talent turn into color. What good was that to him? He grumbled to himself as he went to the grand piano, running his fingers across the glossy black finish. He looked around and noticed everything around him being quiet, that for a brief instant he was alone.
He sat on the stool and placed his fingers delicately on the keys, he thought for a moment and his fingers began to sweep across the keys. The air surrounding him swirled in the shining colorful lights, the swirl beautiful shades of blue and turquoise as he opened the song slowly. He opened his mouth and began to sing the words he had been writing before his transformation, a secret love song for the world to enjoy. The words flowed from him and the rich sound began to flow into the display of blue with a soft red and orange. The power seemed so useless to him and yet the magical display always enchanted him, bringing him into a trance like state.
Edward casually leaned his body over the banister of the grand staircase, listening to Billie’s carefully calculated music writing. Billie would continue to swiftly move his fingers across the keys but would stop and tweak something he had sung and the vocal colors would disappear. Edward watched the display and began to find it hard to focus on anything, other than the mesmerizing colors. The music stopped abruptly and the cloud in Edward’s mind began to fade along with the colors, then he heard the singer frustrated contemplations. ‘What kind of power is this, if I was a superhero I would be laughed at, Oh look at Billie Joe all he can do is make pretty colors with his music.’ Edward chuckled quietly as he said, “You know Billie your powers mature over time.” Billie looked up his fingers still hovering over the keys, “I knew it was too good to believe that I was alone.” Edward smirked as he crossed the living room and sat beside the singer, “You and I both know that you don’t want to be alone Billie.”
Billie snorted and began to randomly play a few notes on the keys and caused color to dance from the tips of his fingers and swirl into the sky and disappear. “So powers mature.” He said as he stopped his playing again and looked at him, “It is possible that you haven’t truly used your power, yes you have been able to produce this lovely show.” Edward continued as he moved his hand back in forth in the air, “That doesn’t mean this is your power.”Billie thought for a moment as he continued to randomly play a few more notes and he continued, “I just don’t understand what this could be used for. It just isn’t useful; it isn’t like I can hear what someone is thinking.” Edward smiled and ran his fingers in time with Billie at the lower octave which caused Billie to smile slightly, “Yes granted you can’t but when I was a mortal.” He paused as Billie’s music faded and his eyes fixed on him, “I was quite perceptive to people and what they were thinking without actually hearing it.”
Billie processed this slowly and continued with his playing, “So what you’re saying,” there was a pause in his music, “Is that your power steams from something you had as a talent in your former life.” Edward nodded as he echoed the melody Billie had just played, “Think about what you used your music for Billie, it had a resonating power that you never even realized existed.” Edward smiled as Billie continued to play with him, listening to Billie’s joyful thoughts as he continued to test the older vampire’s musical talent.
“So school starts in a week,” Edward offered after a few moments of silence other than the music that swirled around the two of them. Billie laughed and he let his fingers rest and looked Edward in the eyes, “I was going to be 37 years old. There is no way I am going back to school. Not to mention that I dropped out of school, so the likelihood of me going back is slim.” He thought for a moment and then smiled “Actually, it’s not even slim. It’s nonexistent.” Edward sighed, “You look about twenty Billie, it’s part of the reason we can live with mortals.” Billie narrowed his eyes as he slammed angrily on the keys and the music around him morphed into a bright dangerous red and it began to swirl in a quicker flow than it had when the music was soft.
“If I can live with mortals…” he said as his nostrils began to flare in anger as the music continued harshly around him, Edward began to feel a heat as he sat there engulfed in Billie’s angry music. “Then why can’t I be with Mike.” The last word came out like a dagger, the music flowed from his fingers and Edward felt his body freeze as the red notes surrounded him. The heat was unbearable in the confines of the swirling color; Edward began to wonder if it were possible to be melted from the intense heat. The flower vase sitting in front of them began to smolder and then engulfed in flames, cascading the burned pedals to the ground. The music stopped as Billie stared at the falling cinders and he heard Edward chuckle. “You know why you can’t see him Billie. You are not the same-“Billie growled as he stood up, “I am the same person. Mike would love me no matter what I looked like or was.” He began to walk to the stairs as Edward looked at him.
“It has nothing to do with the question of how much he loves you Billie, it has to do with what could happen to him if you lost control. For even a second Billie, you could kill him.” Billie trembled, his hand clutching the rail, “I didn’t think of it like that…” he said softly and returned his eyes to the stairs in front of him. “Oh and Billie.” He said averting the singer’s attention back to the piano, “I’m impressed again.” Billie smiled as he gracefully ascended the staircase, the thrill he felt from what he had done still emanating from him.

When school began in the forks area, Billie spent his days pacing the empty house randomly bursting out songs still trying to achieve the power he had only a week before. He sat frustrated on the edge of a couch in the pretend living space, thinking about the scenario where the flowers caught ablaze because of him. Slowly his emotions flooded him about how he felt when Edward told him why they went to school to put up a façade of everyday life. It finally hit him, the one thing he always tried to control when he was on stage; never wanting to completely let his lyrics over run him with emotion.
He began to sing softly and thought about Mike, his emotions finally overtaking him and caused him to shake slightly as he sang. The clouds that littered the air around him began to darken and he heard thunder rolling in the distance, he stopped singing and waited and silence fell over the area again. The clouds began to lighten as though the storm had passed until Billie allowed his pained voice to come from his throat again, the same pain in his chest that came to him when he wanted to cry. Rain began to fall softly and then picked up the pace as Billie continued, the clouds finally giving him the release of tears that had been pent up in him for so long.
Billie left the house shortly after as the clouds remained dark and ominous in the sky, it had been far too long since he had silently stood beside Mike’s window. As he scaled the fire escape and slunk into his normal position he heard the sound of a bass being strummed, he leaned forward basking in Mike’s scent and smiled as he heard him playing. A frown crossed his lips when he spotted the thin streams of tears creeps down his gaunt cheeks, a jolt of pain hit him as he heard the soft sad song that fell from the bassist’s lips as he strummed mechanically.
Billie softly began to whisper his love song, the one he had been perfecting when he transformed. The one he wanted to sing to Mike as they lay in each others arms, and the ice blue eyes began to close and drift into a dream world. He kept his voice low as he sang lower than the bass strumming inside, the brilliant pinks and red cascading the fire escape. Mike stopped strumming suddenly looking at the window, a peak in his curiosity. He walked cautiously over to the windowsill, where the bright red color flickered against the dark bricks, Billie stopped singing and crawled to the balcony below and watched Mike crawl out of the window, he looked slightly dazed as his eyes scanned the street below.
“I really am losing my mind.” He muttered to himself as he sat down his legs curled under him, he reached into his pocket and looked at his phone. A look of desperation in his eyes as he began to run through his index of phone numbers, he paused as the highlight stayed fixed on a number causing tears to threaten at the corner of his eyes. “Why couldn’t you just fucking listen to me, just fucking once in your life Billie?” Billie let out a sigh and looked at the cool steel under his feet, “Me too…” he said softly looking back up at the bassist who pressed the phone to his ear, “Tre?” Mike said miserably into the phone as Billie’s keen hearing picked up on Tre’s barely audible hello, “Look I’m sorry for what I said…”
Mike fell silent as Tre began to speak and Billie tried hard to concentrate on just the conversation, “I know Mike, I’m not mad at you I know you’re hurt. But I’m just trying to help…” Mike nodded and ran his hand across his face, “I can’t even remember how to breathe without him Tre,” he continued as he looked up to the sky and its few visible stars. “Maybe you really should just come back to the bay Mike.” Tre said trying to sound friendly, “Seattle is making you go crazy.” Mike laughed darkly, “I can’t leave Tre.” There was silence before Tre sighed into the phone, “Mike you’re scaring me, you can’t live like this for the rest of your life.” Mike clasped his forehead letting his shoulders fall forward as he began to shake, “I just…I don’t know if I want a life without Bill-“ Tre’s voice began to raise as he cut the other man off, “Do I need to come Mike? I don’t want to get a call saying that you-“Mike snapped into the receiver, “I’m not that fucking crazy Tre, it’s a figure of speech.”
The silence that fell after that statement even caused Billie to shiver, Billie remained motionless on the landing, his eyes fixed on the metal above his head. “There is no need for you to come here, unless you want to see me chew half cooked ramen and mope all day.” There was another sigh from the drummer, “Mike please try to let him go.” He heard the phone snap shut, cutting off Tre’s conversation and he heard Mike grunt, “Easy for you to say, you already ‘let’ him go.” He stood and began to creep into the window mumbling, “It’s easier said than done.”
Billie shifted uneasily as he began to climb back onto the firs escape moments later; he listened and heard nothing inside of the small apartment. He heard the scraping of metal on the concrete bellow and looked over the lip of the balcony to see Mike begin to walk south of the building. Billie hesitated as he watched Mike’s silhouette disappear into the winding streets and alleys bellow. ‘It can’t really hurt if I follow him,” Billie thought as he began to scale the rooftops tracking his lover’s scent, “I mean I already stalk him at his apartment to watch him sleep,” Billie smirked stopping in the ledge by where Mike had paused to contemplate where to go. ‘Hell I could be like his guardian vampire.’ He chuckled out loud from this and Mike began to squint down a dark alley, Billie covered his mouth to silence another giggle. ‘I really have to stop torturing him; poor thing must think he’s hearing voices.’
As Billie continued to follow Mike he also noticed that the streetlights in the area were dimming around them, darkness beginning to envelop them. Mike stopped again this time beginning to realize how far he was from his apartment, and how dark it was truly getting around him. A shiver ran up the bassist’s spine as a cold wind blew roughly around him. Billie felt a panic as he started to take in the corner Mike was on, standing on the ledge of the building he began to scope the surroundings. Billie heard Mike leave; he glared at him as the bassist continued into the dark end of town, right to the dead end. ‘Dead End’ Billie shivered as he took off again, after the tall man disappeared, ‘Mikey what the hell are you doing, go the fuck back to your damn apartment.’ He had gotten to the ledge overlooking the blackened dead end, the only light that was there had been smashed over the year. Billie shivered again as he noticed someone standing on the street corner; far enough from him that it was hard to see his features. The scent that flooded Billie’s note caused him to taste venom in his mouth, the scent terrified him.
