The Field cuckoo bumblebee

Feb 22, 2023 13:29

This cuckoo bumblebee is widespread across England and Wales. However in Scotland, it is limited to the south with occasional records in the Highlands. They have no particular habitat preference.

The species has dark wings, but generally has a very yellow appearance, with a yellow-black-yellow thorax and large yellow patches on the sides of the abdomen, sometimes so extensive that the entire abdomen can appear yellow, with a narrow black strip along the top. At the other extreme, melanic (all black) individuals are not uncommon. This is the only cuckoo bumblebee with a yellow tail!

Because this species is a cuckoo, no workers are produced (and so have no pollen baskets) but instead take over the nest of the Common carder bee.

A short-tongue species they favour white clover, thistles, blackberry and teasel.
