Dear humiliating friend, First, follow your own advice. I believe the term is "insipidity". I prefer insipidness myself. And the next time you trash American culture you must smash all your jazz recordings of the last over 120 years. No Louis Armstrong for you, or Miles Davis or John Coltrane, no Bessie Smith, no Ella Fitzgerald, or Aretha Franklin; no Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Tennessee Wiliams or Arthur Miller; no Faulkner, no Bellow or Roth, no Frost or Sandburg or e.e.cummings; no Capra, or Coppolla or Scorcese; no Marlon Brando or DeNiro or Streep (rather good portrayal of Thatcher, no?); some of the greatest engineers, scientists and doctors in the world, with innovations that have led the world in health and prosperity; a culture that has made enormous, selfless sacrifices for the welfare of others. Your sons and daughters have often benefited from an American education and discovered lives of service and unparalleled avenues for artistic expression. You should have more sympathy for our current situation. After all, you know what it's like to have suffered under a Mad King or practiced diplomacy with the tip of a bayonet. This is a time when the good people of all countries must unite to throw off those three poisons you brought up. In the interests of international harmony, as I admit to my endless appreciation of British culture and accept your sincere apology in advance.

You have got to be kidding me. Your insular belief that the US is some sort of paradise is laughable in its naivety. There is a reason the planet chortles at your expense. But right on point, you come out with a maudlin defence of the country that holds no water. It's people like you, in your arrogance, that truly epitomize the "ugly American".

No, it’s not. He’s correct. An ugly American is an American that has no pride in his country. The writer of this article is an elitist British chatterbox making non-substantive attacks.
