On the Radio: Lance Bass
From boy band to satellite radio host (and coming out in between) In case anyone tuned into SiriusXM late last week, they may have noticed a new gay voice on the satellite radio network Friday. Former *NSYNC member Lance Bass joined the fray as host of The Pop Ten every Friday night (10 a.m.-12 a.m.) with an encore presentation on the station’s all-LGBT channel OutQ on Saturday nights (9-11 p.m.). The show counts down music favorites with the help of special in-studio guests.
Bass is in good company, joining other openly LGBT SiriusXM hosts like Michelangelo Signorile, Rosie O’Donnell and Frank DeCaro.
“I want The Pop Ten to be the soundtrack my fans jumpstart their weekends with,” says Bass, who calls the show a “weekly pop culture party” that he’ll host in both New York and L.A.
The doe-eyed host says as well as showcasing his own favorite new songs on the air - everything from dance, pop and rock to world music (yes, world music), he’ll also accept suggestions from fans via Twitter @lancebass, on Facebook and during live calls. So if you can’t possibly live another day without hearing, say, “Bye, Bye, Bye,” you’ll know exactly who to call.
“Lance is a pop music aficionado whose personality and perspective - as both a fan and an artist - make him a great fit for SiriusXM,” says Scott Greenstein, president of the satellite radio group. “As an artist, he’s earned his spot in pop culture history. As the host of The Pop Ten, he will delight millions of longtime fans and have fun making new ones.”
Bass is also openly gay. He came out publicly in a cover story for People magazine in 2006 after rumors swirled for years during the height of his boy band fame (and after he was photographed celebrating July 4th weekend in oh-so-gay vacation resort Provincetown). He’s also been linked to several leading men over the years, including Reichen Lehmkuhl, who reprises his role on The A-List New York on Logo starting July 25th.
And this question never gets old, apparently...another article about his radio show, but the interviewer couldn't restrain him/herself:
Lance Bass Says 'N Sync Reunion Would Be Unfair To Timberlake An interview with Lance Bass practically begs the question: Will 'N Sync ever reunite?
"Just like Justin Bieber said, 'Never say never.' But I don't see it happening anytime soon," Bass tells the Famous. "We're all brothers, we all love each other, and we've all gone in different directions. Justin has made a CRAZY solo career, and ... he's in film right now and he's doing so great in that. He'd be stupid to stop that as he's on a roll. Because when you do an album it take a year, you know, a year and a half. To stop that momentum for someone like him, that would just not be fair to him. A few years down the road, cool, I'm in, but right now is just not the time."
Meanwhile, Bass is excited about other nostalgia summer tours by New Kids On the Block with Backstreet Boys and Tiffany with Debbie Gibson. "I would love to jump onstage with them at any time," he gushes.
Timberlake might be a big movie star and all that, but Bass is no slouch either: he's creating a boy-band reality competition show for VH1 starring Backstreet's A.J McLean, 'N Sync's Joey Fatone and New Kids' Joey McIntyre, among others. And today, he announced a new weekly countdown show on SiriusXM called "The Pop Ten." It will feature Bass' favorite 10 songs of the week from eclectic and emerging artists.
"Growing up, I always wanted to be a radio DJ," he says. "I would listen to my dad's records of Wolfman Jack and DJ, and I would record songs from the radio on my tape player and pretend I was a DJ and play the hot new songs. Then when I grew up, and my voice changed, and I was the first one in my class to have a bass voice, everyone was like, 'You should be a radio DJ!' So it's always been in the back of my head."
The two-hour show, which debuts July 1 at 10 p.m. ET, will also feature a revolving peanut gallery of friends and celebrity guests. They'll riff on gossip headlines, their favorite reality shows and pretty much everything else. "You put a little wine in 'em, and it's gonna be magic," says Bass.
Given Bass' respect for his 'N Sync bandmates, does this mean certain Timberlake-related topics are off the table? We're talking specifically about the "SexyBack" singer's growing reputation as a womanizer.
"Playa hater," teases Bass. "Just because he's a pimp, you can't be a playa hata."
Oh, Lance.
