In the same vein as last Tuesday's post, but somewhat more serious (plus a meta! tag) I was wondering if anyone has thoughts on how this whole *social networking thing* has changed fandom.
This is actually something that I've been thinking about a lot lately, especially on the heels of LJ's
TOS updates and all. In the last few weeks I've also had a ton of my friends delete their Facebook pages. (Whaaat?!) Maybe most of you are thinking, "so what?" but this was a pretty big deal for me. lol I don't know if it was in response to The Social Network coming out, or Facebook's continually user-un-friendly updates, or the recent
spate of lawsuits, but I think this is the beginning of a backlash. Also, this post on
AJ's Twitter made me really sad:
Hey all of u saying not nice things to @rochelledeanna I'd appreciate it if u stop it's uncool. Get a life one that's not mean!!!!!
3:11 PM Dec 18th via Twitter for iPhone Brian also made a similar post a few months back. This is probably a rhetorical question, but if you consider yourself a fan of someone, why on earth would you want to hurt their significant other? Which by extension hurts the person you're a fan of? I will never understand that. I have to wonder if websites such as Twitter, etc. make it far more possible for fans to make asses of themselves. Social networking has provided a way for our favorite celebrities to make themselves far more accessible to fans, but what are they getting in return? Does it perhaps encourage fans to do stupid things? Has it changed our expectations for celebrity interaction, or interaction in general?
Also, have a clip of Justin in The Social Network. As a reward for listening to me ramble, and because it's totally relevant eye candy!
