Far beneath the city, a father watches his children at play. He beams upon them lovingly, going through names for each in his mind. For the first time in his long life, he feels like the world is full of possibilities and wants to give each the right name to help them capture every possibility this world, as long as he can protect them from the above world, can possibly offer them. There are many names darting through his cunning mind as his own tail softly taps the cement.

The eldest of the four is playing with a stick; Yoshi can already tell that the small turtle will do well in life wielding a sword. Laughter breaks from him as he watches the youngest diving into a puddle being formed from water dripping from a loose pipe. These tiny lives take such immense wonder in the smallest of things he and others would for granted.

A squall breaks through the peace. Yoshi's whiskers bristle as he looks down among the biggest of the turtles who has taken one of the metal pieces with which the quietest one has been playing intently. The bigger child is simply beating the dull (the doting father had made certain earlier that there were no sharp edges in either small piece) metal against the cement and grinning as it makes a loud racket.

Yoshi snatches away the metal and returns it to the quiet one, patting his cheek as he does so. The other, from whence the metal has been taken, wails as soon as his quieter brother beams and returns to playing with the two pieces. Yoshi can tell the turtle is trying to make the pieces into something more than they are apart, but he's not about to leave the other child without something else to entertain him.

He reaches into his robe and removes another piece of metal. He held this one back, because it does have a slight sharpness to one edge. He gives it to the other child and watches carefully as he examines it, knocks it against the sewer's floor, and discovers the sharp edge. A wide grin bursts across his face as he takes that sharpness to the wall. Yoshi's ears lay back against his head, but he still grins as he watches the young turtle run a little ways from him, delighting in the screeching sound the metal makes against the cement.

He looks back to his other three, the tip of his tail again beating out a gentle rhythm as the noise of the city rushes over their heads. The world is full of possibilities down here with them. Just as the smartest of the four is trying to make something more of his metal pieces, they, too, are made something more together. His children will paint the world with their color and light, and in that moment, Yoshi knows from whence their names will come. He'll name them each after painters, painters of the world.

The End
