Gordon never knew when he was there until the Batman was ready to announce his presence. It was always in a single move, usually one step forward in the dark night, that told him he was no longer alone. Some nights, he never even saw him. They would speak, exchange information or, rather, he would give the vigilante whatever information he thought he might find useful in his quest to save lives, but some nights, no words were exchanged.
Some nights, they didn't need to talk. It was sometimes just enough to know that he was not alone in daunting task to save as much of Gotham as he could. Sometimes, it was simply the presence of another man who understood the tragedies with which they struggled that Gordon needed. Sometimes, it was just the presence of a friend.
Some nights, he neither saw nor heard him, but he knew he was there. He was always there when he needed him. He would find his presence in either a foot print left behind in the snow or another villain tied up and waiting for him to place firmly and securely behind the bars where they belonged. Some nights, the signs of another who shared his life were even more subtle.
Tonight is one of the latter. It hasn't been an especially busy night, at least not for him. He's quite certain the Batman is working on a case which his officers have yet to discover, but it's nothing unusual -- not for Gotham and not for them. He's had time when he could talk, but perhaps Batman hasn't. Or perhaps, like Gordon himself, he feels the chill of the night air in his bones and does not wish to speak.
Still, he clearly wants him to remember he's there. He's always there, Jim knows, whenever he needs him. He has merely to shine his light into the dark, night sky, and he will come. Sometimes, he has merely to call his name. Tonight he's been with him, and he hasn't had to do either of those things.
He doesn't know when he arrived, but he knows he's gone by the time he notices his presence in his office. There's a breeze blowing a few snowflakes in from his open window, but he always leaves the window open now, regardless of how freezing the temperatures are outside. He always wants him to be able to reach him swiftly, just in case.
It would have been nice to know when he was here, but the knowledge that he was here is all Gordon really needs. He looks at his open box of doughnuts, now missing a jelly doughnut, which he knows is the Batman's favorite and the reason he orders them, and smiles, reassured again. He sips his coffee, but it's not his drink that warms his insides. It's the man even now swinging through Gotham's dark night. It's the hero who protects them all, himself included. Smiling, he raises his mug.
The End
