He knows they're standing at a precipice of a revolution that will forever change history. His people have always been down trodden. He's witnessed and experienced such hatred over mere prejudice. There have been so many lives lost already, and there are many more deaths yet to come. But most of those, Erik is grimly determined, will be on the other side.
Still, there's something missing. Still, he doesn't feel complete. He doesn't feel the joy he'd thought he would when this day finally comes. He looks down at his own, right hand clenching empty air. There should be another hand in it, he thinks. Charles should be here, but he chose not to be.
He sighs wearily. The world will pay, but it won't be enough. It will never be enough as long as prejudice and hatred exists in their world, and even after mutants come into their rightful, ruling place, there will still be hatred, still be prejudice.
He sighs again and knows, if he could, he would change it all -- or almost all. They would still be standing on the precipice of a revolution and a new day, but it would no longer be mutants rising up against humans. Love would rise from the ashes of humanity. Love would rise, and love would rule, and by his side forever more would be his beloved, cherished Charles.
But it is not meant to be. Charles will never be the man he needs him to be, although he'll never stop being the man Erik needs and, in secret, loves. But they can not be together, not now, not ever. Revolution is here, and mutants will rule. Erik sighs one more time before placing his final, ultimate plan into motion. The humans will not recover from this one, and neither will love. But no one sees the unshed tears in his old eyes. No one knows how lonely it is at the top, when all their kinship is freed, no one but the man still standing alone, no one but the Master of Magnetism and the master of his own broken heart.
The End
