He doesn’t see Edward’s genius, he doesn’t appreciate it. None of them do; Edward’s heard their jeers and their laughter his entire life. So what if his experiments might tamper with people’s minds? Most people’s minds could use a little tampering!
Edward’s looked up to Bruce, admired him, worshipped him even. He has books full of magazine clippings that he can’t bring himself to throw away, despite the way Bruce has let him down, the way he’s proven himself to be no better than the rest of the dullards in Gotham.
He’s stared at those photos, burned them into his mind. It wouldn’t matter if he did throw them away, the images are stored in his memory. There to be rifled through whenever Edward feels the urge, and he has to admit that the urge is as strong now he’s decided to hate Bruce as it was when Bruce still seemed like the most incredible person in the world.
Edward used to dream about meeting Bruce, shaking hands with him. And in his dreams, Bruce never turned away from him, never turned down Edward’s proposals. No, instead he saw something special in Edward, instead he extended his friendship with a smile and a knowing wink.
He’s had a lot of dreams about Bruce winking at him like that. He still has dreams about it, in fact.
It doesn’t matter how much of Gotham’s brainpower Edward steals using the NygmaTech Box, doesn’t matter how many secrets of the rich and powerful he uncovers. His mind still defaults back to Bruce whenever Edward closes his eyes.
Two-Face laughs at him, sometimes. The deep, rich chuckle of his good side, the throaty, nasty cackle of his bad one. Like he can judge someone for their obsession.
So when Edward throws his lavish celebration to unveil his latest technology, when Edward tricks Bruce into using his newest incarnation of the Box, when Edward gets to poke around in Bruce’s mind and see all his deepest darkest fears? Well, it turns out things aren’t all they seem.
Because the image burned into Bruce’s mind, the same way that Bruce is burned into Edward’s, turns out to be a bat, of all things.
Edward has to admit, the revelation means Bruce isn’t quite so disappointing after all.
