It isn't the first time the world's ended. It isn't even the first time she's ran this route. But it is the first time she's done it alone. She feels that loneliness in every crevice of this highway, feels it in the long, tall cacti she passes, and even in the humid air that sizzles with intense heat after every bomb. Bombs are dropping all over the world. This is the apocalypse all over again, but this time, for the first time, she's truly alone.
There's music playing in her head as she makes the last miles. She recognizes the song immediately. It's their song. They used to dance to it. They used to fight to it, both their enemies and themselves and even each other. All communications're shot. She'll never hear it on a radio again.
But she does hear it. She hears faint strands of it actually playing somewhere as she roars her bike to a stop, and it is there that she at last finds him, standing at the mile marker for Route 66. They always said they'd meet here when the world ended again. She's surprised to see him and has to blink away her tears.
He's coming toward her as she dismounts. She realizes as she watches him moving, all bulky arsenal and muscle, that even though he's here, she still doesn't know what to expect. Has he come for her? Has he come to spend their last moments together, to say he's sorry, to accept her forgiveness? Or is he here with one last, crazy mission in mind and hoping to enlist her help? She said she wouldn't help him again; she knows that's a lie. She'll do whatever it takes to spend these last few moments on Earth with him, even if it is standing against impossible odds. That used to be her kind of odds.
"Dom," he says, and she sees it in his eyes. He's desperate. He's afraid, but he'll never admit it. He's not afraid that the world's ending. They've seen this before too many times to still be afraid of it. But he is still afraid. He's afraid of her rejection, she realizes, afraid she can't forgive him, afraid he'll have to spend this moments alone.
She answers his unspoken question by grabbing his collar and yanking Nathan's lips down onto hers. The world is ending, but that no longer matters as long as they have each other. Their song plays, the world stops, and Domino wakes up.
Her luck's run out despite her power. She's thought that before, but this time, it's true. She keeps waking up day after day in the wrong place and with the wrong man. Piotr is nice enough, but he'll always be the wrong man for her. She sighs against his back and closes her eyes, trying to recapture those last few moments of her dream. She almost wishes the world would end. Maybe then, at least, she'd have another chance with Cable.
