Summary:Charles allows himself a human memory, triggered by a record

Charles didn't like to show too much sentiment in front of the students. They needed to see him as a figurehead, not as a person with flaws, uncertainties, and emotions that he couldn't control. He kept up his strength as long as he could for their sake as well as the sake of the world that depended upon him to protect it, making sure not to linger too long upon the past or on memories that he knows he should have buried long ago.

Tonight, with the moon shining brightly through the window of his private study, he allows himself to indulge a bit in memory. He glides his way over to the low wooden shelf that houses his record player and thumbed through the vinyls he kept on the lower shelf. He pulled out The Doors' "Morrison Hotel" record and looked at it with a smile on his face. As he pulled the flat disc out of the sleeve he remembered when he first got the record, how excited he had been to be one of the first to listen to it. He had first shared it with Erik, back when both of them were lost and clinging to each other while they searched for a greater purpose.

Erik had sneered at Charles when he first listened to the music, making sure that Charles knew that the album was a mess of incoherent lyrics sung by a singer who was clearly out of his mind and high. Charles would have been hurt if he hadn't caught Erik singing "Roadhouse Blues" under his breath while they drove to a new city to search for more of their kind. He had turned his eyes away from the road and looked incredulously at Erik. "I can't believe you." He remarked.

"What?" Erik responded with a raised eyebrow, his expression otherwise stoic, "The genius telepath can't believe something?"

"You gave me all that crap yesterday and here you are singing the same songs that you told me I was an idiot for listening to."

"Well they still are incoherent. They just happen to be catchy as well." Charles could feel emotions of fondness at the edge of his thoughts coming from Erik and had softened his annoyance. Erik met his eyes and smiled, causing Charles to laugh in response.

Now in the present Charles laughed as well, singing the songs along with the ghost of Jim Morrison. He wished that the person he had known then was still around to sing them with him.
