Jane lies beside him, sheets tangled around her legs, feeling warm and rested. She knows Thor isn’t asleep, his breathing is too shallow, his body too still, but he allows her this moment of peace. The morning sunlight is creeping across the bed, lighting up tousled blonde hair like a halo, and she finds it hard to believe she ever thought him a normal man, rather than the God he so clearly is.
It isn’t until she reaches forward, tucking a stray lock behind his ear, that Thor smiles, slow and happy, eyes fluttering open.
“Good morning,” he murmurs, voice husky with sleep, hand settling on her hip.
“I missed you so much,” Jane says, and then bites her lip, eyes squeezing shut. Her voice is too thick with emotion, too pained for such a perfect morning, and she aches for those years she searched for him, even though he’s here with her now.
His hand strokes up her side, cups her face, and he always knows what to say to calm her, to help her. Only this time he remains silent, and when she opens her eyes again he’s staring back at her with such sorrow, such devotion.
She whispers his name, and he pulls her close, crushes her to his chest. Jane presses her face to his skin, inhales his scent, burrows into the tight warmth of his arms.
“Stay with me,” she says, quiet and small, and he kisses her hair, fingers flexing against her back.
“Always,” Thor promises, eternity written into his voice, and Jane trembles and relaxes into the safety of his embrace.
