It was a mission like any other. Get in, kill the target, and get out. As Natasha drove up and parked her blue sedan two blocks away from her target's large house in suburbia, popping in a pair of headphones so she would just look like a person casually taking a walk to enjoy the summer sun. Of course when she went on a walk she took a couple of guns and combat knives stuffed in her purse; you know, casual summer attire.
The kill went by easily enough. You catch someone in their bedroom while they are halfway asleep and the whole job became a hundred times easier. It wasn't until she heard the rustling from behind her after the initial shots were fired that anything unexpected happened.
She turned around with her gun still drawn. "Come out." she commanded.
From the doorway came a small girl, looking terrified. She couldn't have been more than 7 with long blonde hair and wide, green eyes. Natasha's heart sank.
"Is it only you there?" she asked, not yet lowering her gun.
The small girl nodded.
"What's your name?"
"Lila." the girl responded, her voice high and shaky.
Natasha lowered her weapon, never taking her eyes off of the girl. "Was he your father?"
"Yes." the girl responded, nodding.
"You got any other family?"
The girl shook her head.
Natasha paused for a moment, torn. She should just leave the girl there, but something in the girl's gaze as she looked upon the fresh corpse of her father stuck uncomfortably in her mind. The words were almost out of her mouth before she had fully processed them. "Follow me." she ordered before turning about and walking away. The small footsteps behind her let her know that she was being followed.
She didn't know where she was going, but she wasn't going to let another blood-stained orphan slip through the cracks like she did.
