"Out! All of you!" she demanded, yellow eyes ablaze. "Before I kill you myself for trying to bring a pathetic name to villainy!"
They scurried like mice, running as fast as they could go and escaping through doors, windows, and any other way they could. She glared at the one remaining; he bolted straight through the wall. She sighed and rubbed her temples as she looked at hole he'd made. "All muscle and never any brains."
But there was a man who had both, a man she'd sworn to never contact again. She reached for her cell without a second thought.
"Whaddya want, frail?"
She smiled at the familiar snarl. "You."
"Those days are done."
She snorted. "Believe me, Creed, I'm not interested in that thing between your legs."
"That'd be a first."
"I'm gathering a new team."
"Thought you said your days with teams were done."
"I thought my days with you were done, but I need somebody with a muscle and a brain."
"Not too many of people like us around," he agreed, growling, "but I told ya I wan't goin' off on another of your loser missions against the X-Men."
"I've got a new plan," she told him hurriedly, ignoring the shivers his growl went racing down her spine.
"You always do." He sighed, and she heard the muffled sounds of him killing somebody on the other end of the line. She was quite sure whoever it was had had it coming to them and couldn't have cared less even if they hadn't. "But yer lucky. I'm bored. Tell me one thing. This plan o' yers. Will it hurt the pup?"
"Devastate and then kill him." Her yellow orbs sparkled; she knew she had him.
"I'm in. I'll find ya."
He ended their call, and she knew he would. Creed always found her. She looked up and toward the new wall in her hole as she sensed somebody approaching. A small head peeked through the corner of the hole, a high-pitched voice asking, "Are the auditions over? Oh. It's you. I'll go."
"No, Toad. Don't bother."
"Really?" he asked hopefully.
"Really." His proverbial rap sheet might have had more insect massacres than anything else on it, but she knew he wouldn't run from the X-Men as fast as the supposed villains she'd interviewed earlier. And he did have the capacity for murder.
She smiled. Grinning in response, Toad hopped through the hole. Horrible things happened when Mystique smiled, and he was ready for something horrible, as long as it was exciting, to happen again. When she smiled, he knew he'd get both and probably almost lose his life in the process, but it was worth it.
"I'm bringing together the old team."
"Again?" he squeaked, then silenced when her eyes cut a deadly glower at him.
"Cool." He widened his grin instead of quaking visibly. She had a new plan. He'd be lucky to survive the encounter, but he'd also be a fool not to try. "When do we start?"
The End
