She gazes out over the freezing water and remembers, with misty, blue eyes, all that's happened over the last year or so. Her redemption had been so close before the Phoenix. She'd actually been considered a good guy by most at long last. She'd been a long standing member of the X-Men. She'd been a rock to which her students were finally, albeit still slowly, beginning to turn. She'd been becoming the woman she'd always wanted to be.

And then the Phoenix had hit them, because it couldn't find its regular host. It had sensed in each of them a power as great as Jean's and a darkness far more formidable and easily turnable. It'd caused Scott to kill Charles, Magneto to go evil again, and she herself to lose everything for which she'd spent the last several years, since awakening to find her cherished Hellions killed, working so hard.

She'd lost the respect and trust of those who'd finally allowed her to earn it. She'd betrayed the only person who'd ever truly loved her. She'd helped to almost bring the mutant race to its proverbial knees. She'd destroyed everything she'd touched.

But in that madness, Emma thinks, reaching down and running gloved fingers across the surging, icy tide, there'd been one touch of sanity. There'd been another possible route, and if not for the Phoenix darkening her thoughts, she might've taken it. She could have been a Queen in true title as well as name. She could have left behind all the cares of the world, but then, she thought, if she had, she would no longer be able to help her race. She would no longer be here for the mutant children who now needed her.

Her eyes glisten as she thinks of Namor. He had offered her so much. His passion had been so wild, and yet, his touch so gentle. He had offered her his world. He had offered to worship her every day for the rest of her life. She could have had so much, but like the water now running between her fingers, Emma had let all that potential slip.

She remembers tormenting Bobby for years because he had refused to recognize his full potential. She recalls pushing every student she'd ever had, no matter how much it angered them or hurt them emotionally, to develop their full power. She knows she'd wielded Scott into the General he's become. She's always believed in reigning with one's full potential, and yet she let go of what she could have been.

"M-Miss Frost?"

She barely glances up, but when she does, she can't help but to smirk. Jean Grey has actually come to ask her for advice. How pleasantly ironic! But she turns to the mutant child nonetheless, knowing she'll help her because that's what she does. She helps the children who would have no one else. She helps them and wishes there'd been somebody to help her, and an ocean away, Namor turns around again.

The End
