Far above the planes screamed and the windows of the bombed out city rattled in their frames. Steve could feel his back press into stone behind him. He took a small bit of solace in the strength of the stone as the windows around him shattered as shrapnel pierced them. Steve threw up his shield as bits of glass rained down around him. No bullets hit. Must have just been a lucky grenade that found the building near where his troop was.

He said a silent prayer that they were all still safe. He had no clue of how to get out of this mess yet, but at least they were all uninjured and the two wounded civilians were still conscious. The important thing was that he had to stay strong. The slightest weakness and the other men would lose faith. But with Captain America on their side surely they couldn't lose. Right?

It was only supposed to be a simple clean-up mission, a chance to make sure that no Nazis were lurking in the buildings as they collected the wounded from the city that had just been bombed. As it had turned out there were more than a few Nazis waiting for them.

He raised a pistol behind his shield and took aim at the rifleman across from him. Steve's shot hit home, but two more Nazis found their position. One of the wounded civilians next to him started freaking out.

"We're going to die here. We're going to die here. I know it, I can smell it in the air."

Steve told one of the soldiers to cover the window while he went to the man's side.

He could smell the wound beginning to fester. The bandages needed to be changed and he needed to be out of the dirt, but that was not a possibility now.

"Calm down, sir. Everything's going to be alright."

"How can you be so sure of that? They are better armed and have more troops than us."

"I can be sure because men like them don't ever win for very long. They can put on a good show of force, but in the end those that triumph only through cruelty will fall. Good men just won't allow them to live."

Like a sign from the heavens gunshots were heard. "They're falling, sir!" announced his comrades-at-arms.

Captain America made his way to the window and gazed outwards. He saw a man with a bald head and an eye patch leading a troop of soldiers in allied colors towards them and weaving a path of destruction through the Nazis.

"You Captain America?" said the man with the eye patch.

"That I am sir." Steve saluted and then motioned to the wounded men, "These men need help, right away. They need to be taken to a medic."

The man with the eye patch nodded, taking fire at someone in the building diagonal from them. "Alright. My team will cover yours. Get those men to safety!"
