what about the after effects? i assume you were already at U of O at the time. was it hard to deal with all the other name-related things catching up to the change?

It wasn't as painful as I expected. When I travel I just make sure to carry my papers because United keeps screwing up seeing two names on my account and goes with the name they understand. I just gave up on them. Drivers ID, Social Security, credit cards, all super easy. I just showed them, or sent them copies of my court papers. I never changed my birth certificate because I just don't care about it. I was born with a different name and that's fine with me, it's my history.
U of O had to send me two degrees before they got my name right. Surprisingly the gov seems to get it right!

I never changed my birth certificate because I just don't care about it.

aren't there some times when you need your birth certificate? i know i needed mine to get my CA driver license. do these "papers" you mention substitute for that?

I needed the court signed and stamped papers and I think some proof of where I was currently living for the license. I'd call to make sure, but I thought it was that easy. The SS was so easy i felt like I was robbing a bank. It took all of 5 min. I don't know if they were even paying attention.
