It's funny how things sometimes seem to come in cycles. Despite the disastrous drunken trek to Austin for shiny things, Jason had managed to narrowly avoid totally screwing up his relationship with Taylor and they were back in the place where Jason stopped doing impulsive stupid things and Taylor agreeing not to smack him down for worrying her so much. Actually, things were really great, maybe even better now they had their first official 'fight'. In a way, it was kind of healthy and helped them both realise exactly what it was going to take to keep operating on the same page. Jason was learning what it was like to have someone deeply love him and worry when things weren't right with him. Taylor was learning that there really was more to like than living, breathing and existing just for work, and that more was Jason Street. So, so much more.
They were now back to sitting together alone in the deserted Panthers stadium, just like they had done the night of their first date. A cycle, without them even realising it. Jason had wanted to try and make up for his jerkface behaviour over the past few days so he took Taylor out for dinner at one of Dillon's nicest restaurants, a small Italian place where they shared every course and then found themselves back at the stadium with Taylor sitting on the edge of the sideline bench and Jason parked closely beside her. They had Taylor's iPod with one earphone each as they listened to the soft music and held hands looking up at the clear spring night sky.
Taylor watched as Jason's blue eyes looked over the stars and she smiled, squeezing his hand. "What are ya' thinkin', QB?" she asked him. "Ya' look like ya' got some d'n'm thoughts goin' on in that gorgeous head of yours."
Jason's eyes dropped from the stars to Taylor's face with a smile. He shook his head and laughed a little. "I was just thinking how much I'd give to dance with you right now," he admitted softly and put her hand up to his lips to kiss it. "Blame it on the Tiramisu. It made me sentimental."
Taylor brushed her fingers through his hair fondly. “Come move in front of me,” she urged, reaching to unhook the brakes on his chair. “Right up close as far as ya’ can get between my knees. Come on…”
Jason laughed, not sure what she was getting at but obliged all the same, taking the earphone from his ear to he could manoeuvre himself from her side to her close in front of her. “I’m thankful you’re so flexible,” he teased, his nose scrunching up with a smile. He brushed his hands up her thighs as he watched her curiously. “What next?”
“This.” Taylor tucked the earphone back into his ear and did the same with her own. She flicked through the iPod until she came to one of her favourite slow songs ever, ‘Lady In Red’, and ironically enough it was fitting considering, with some help from Sam, she had chosen a red dress for the dinner that night. She wrapped her arms around his neck, pressing her cheek against his, and then started gently rocking with the music. Sure, they weren’t on a dance floor and they weren’t standing, but all that mattered was being close and together. As far as she was concerned, it was dancing, quad style, and it was some of the warmest dancing she had ever experienced.
Jason was speechless at first. It was perfect and he was overcome with a wave of emotional affection for the girl he loved. For the first time since coming back from Austin hung over and feeling like a total knob, he didn’t regret buying that ring. It felt right and with a small flip in his stomach, he wondered if he could get a more perfect moment than this. It was a gorgeous night, they had a great meal together, and the Panthers stadium held special spots in both their hearts. For Jason, it also held a lot of pain and maybe it was time to change that and make it something better and happier than just the place he broke his neck. He stayed contentedly in the embrace until the song drew to an end and then he pulled back, smiling. “Stand up for me?” he asked with a smile and took the iPod from both of their ears again. “Please?”
With a small smile, Taylor smiled back and shook her head a little. “Do I have to? I’m tired and you’re warm,” she murmured, cupping his face and kissing his forehead.
“Please, it’s important,” Jason insisted. It wasn’t like he could just get down on one knee traditionally, was it? He couldn’t feel his knees to kneel. He wanted it to be right. It had to be right and at least she would be standing above him, so it was the best he was going to get. For some reason, he was still carting the ring around with him and he had it in the pocket of his jacket. “There’s something I want to show you.”
There was no way Taylor could turn him down. He was just too sweet and he had her curiosity immediately. When she stood up, though, a slight wave of dizziness caught her, but she managed to hold her composure. When she rest her hand on his shoulder to steady herself, he didn’t seem to realise it was anything more than an affectionate gesture. She wet her lips and nodded a little, smiling. “Okay, we’re are ya’ takin’ me, QB?”
“Nowhere.” Jason took her hands into his and grinned up at her. “It’s no secret that you’ve rocked my world, Mac. I just wished I’d seen it sooner so we didn’t have to waste all this damn time. But we got it now and we’re on the same page. I just wish I could tell you in words how much you’ve changed my life. You can’t possibly ever know how much and I love you like I’ve never loved anyone before. There was a reason I was in Austin and it was all you…” He ureached into his pocket to get the ring out. “Taylor MacKenzie, w-”
“Oh god-” Taylor choked out as an abrupt swell of nausea took her by surprise and she cut him off by pulling her hands out of his and rapidly turning away to throw up spectacularly all over the Panthers sideline, still managing to get it splashed onto his shoes. The Tiramisu might have made Jason sentimental, but he probably didn’t expect it to create a memory quite like this one.
Jason just sort of froze in response he was so shocked. It definitely wasn’t the climax he was expecting to the proposal he had agonised over for days. Was she really puking like there was no tomorrow right before he was about to pop the question? But he blinked out of the frozen shock when reality set in and reached to hold her hair back off her face and the last thing he cared about was his shoes. It wouldn’t be the first time someone threw up on his feet. Tim Riggins was his best friend, after all. The ring stayed - unfortunately - exactly where it had been all day… in his pocket. “Hey, it’s okay, I’ve got you…” he assured her, at a loss of what else he could do to help. Hell, that wasn’t just a bit of a spew, it was their whole meal on rewind and he continued to stare in surprise. This really, really wasn’t how things were supposed to go.
The question was, was the abrupt upchuck because she had realised he was about to propose?
