Jason had a lot of forward planning on his hands. When he suggested the day before to Taylor that they do something together that day, it had been merely just an attempt to cheer her up after she had been sick and miserable for the past couple of days. When he decided to head to the park just down the block from their apartment for a picnic, it all seemed easy enough. At least, it had until Taylor woke up in the early hours of the morning vomiting again. Jason woke with her this time and camped out in the bathroom to keep her company, although he couldn't let it go without firmly suggesting almost to the point of irritation that Taylor should go to the doctor. She reluctantly agreed and made an appointment for the end of the week. She was going to have to go sooner or later anyway.
But Jason's picnic plans seemed defunct when Taylor was likely not going to want to put anything but water near her mouth and, even then, water was questionable. In fact, he didn't really want her to go anywhere but bed. She wasn't in any fit state to protest at five in the morning with her head in the toilet, though, and he pretty much cancelled the picnic. When she woke up again later, though, feeling much better and insisting they still go out, he couldn't deny her. So, he packed up a picnic basket with everything from water and dry crackers to chocolate cheesecake and strawberries. The basket was filled to the brim and this was one of those times being a quadriplegic came in handy... they didn't take a truck to the park because it was only a few blocks away, so he carried the basket in his lap in the chair while Taylor walked beside him. The fresh air seemed to be doing her some good, so although Jason started out eyeing her worriedly and wondering if they really should be venturing out, he relaxed a little when he saw some colour return to her cheeks on the walk to the park.
The picnic had gone well to start with, even if Taylor only ate a little here and there and then reverted back to sipping on her bottle of water. The food was amazing and he had thought of everything. She kicked herself mentally for not feeling more up to it, and that thought just made her anxious and fidgety. She capped the water bottle again in favour of chewing on her nails. She used to have such nice nails, but they were destined for horror after this latest little development. They were sitting at a picnic table so they didn't have the issue of getting Jason on and off a picnic blanket, and the food was spread out before them. It was a gorgeous sunny spring day and she really should be enjoying herself, but she couldn't. Not why she knew and he didn't. It wasn't fair. She needed to tell him. But if she told him today... now... it was going to ruin the picnic he worked so hard to make sweet and special for her. He had wanted to make up for their date that was ruined when she got sick when she was the one who should have been trying to make up for it.
Jason had been watching her, realising that she seemed distracted by something. He took her hand and tucked his thumb in under her fingers with a smile. "Hey, you okay there, babe?" he asked her, squinting a little in the sun.
Taylor nearly jumped when he spoke to her for how far she had been lost in her own thoughts. Her eyes turned to him in time to catch that cute little nose scrunch that came with smiling in the bright sunlight and she couldn't help but smile back. She put his hand up to her lips and kissed it. "I'm fine, darlin'," she blatantly lied. Damnit ! She was never going to tell him if she kept chickening out like this! Procrastinating wasn't going to take the little problem away. It was just going to make it much, much worse. "All this... you spoil me, QB," she laughed softly.
"You deserve spoiling," Jason told her, grinning. "You're amazing. I can't even begin to tell you how happy you make me, Mac."
Taylor shook her head. She was far from amazing. "No- I... no," she told him, shaking her head and dipping her eyes down to their hands. She fell silent, not exactly sure what more to say. It all led back to blurting the news out to him and she really didn't want to ruin this moment like she had done their last one by vomiting on his shoes.
"Yes," Jason insisted, leaning forward. She looked beautiful in the sunlight, even if her face still was a little pallor from the illness. He reached up and brushed his fingers against her soft curls. "You came into my life right when I was convinced this time it just totally sucked. I wanted to give up and you just gave me a reason not to. I love you, Mac. You are amazing. You're the best thing that's ever happened to me."
Whether it was hormones, emotions, or just plain fear, Taylor couldn't be sure, but she started to get teary. She took her hand away from his and put it up to rub her neck, keeping her eyes turned away from him. "Jason..." she murmured. Why did he have to be so damn perfect? It would've been easier if he was a bastard. She normally loved everything that came out of his mouth but now she just felt like a traitor, like she was cheating him. She wasn't amazing. She'd gone and gotten pregnant right when things were supposed to be perfect between them and now she didn't even have the damn balls to tell him! Him, the father who deserved to know every single step of the way what was going on.
"Mac, I..." Jason hadn't realised anything was amiss. She had these shy bursts now and again and he figured this was just one of them. But he knew right then that he wanted to try again. He had to try again. If he kept holding back, he was never going to think he was good enough for her. "I just wanted to tell you that--"
Taylor's stomach jumped up somewhere near her throat. She couldn't take more of his loving praise knowing she was keeping this massive secret from him. "No, Jason, I-I need t'tell ya' somethin'," she said anxiously.
Jason shook his head insistently. "Mac, I just need to say this, okay? It's important. I've wanted to say it for ages but it hasn't worked out and I just need to get it out, alright?" he said, smiling as he cupped his hand around hers. He had the ring that was in the pocket of his jacket again out and with another grin, he held it out to her, with a rush of, "TaylorMacKenzie, will you marry me?"
But it was all bad timing. Taylor didn't realise what he was doing and she didn't want him continuing with his important thing to tell her before he was working with all information, and that meant knowing. He had to know. As he proffered the box and rushed out his question, she simultaneously threw at him, "I'm pregnant!" It was then that her eyes landed on the small black velvet box and they widened, a squeaked gasp catching in her throat as she yanked her hand away from his to slap it over her mouth in shock.
Shock didn't even begin to cut it for Jason. He fumbled with the ring box and it went bouncing from the table onto the grass below. "You what?" he gasped, gaping at her. "Y-Y-"
"I'm pregnant," Taylor repeated from behind her hand, her shoulders slumping as she saw the look on his face. What the fuck had just happened here?
