This question is one that scientists continue to try and answer. In the animal kingdom, the placement of a species on the prey/predator scale has a lot to do with what skills they possess. It sounds obvious, but humans have yet to fully realize what this means.
Humans are the only species that have the ability to rise above their nature. Although they are born with certain skills, their brains have the ability to learn and master new knowledge, thus raising their place on the scale of humanity.
I was speaking to someone recently about this fact, and one of their comments was, "a person shouldn't complain about the job they have when they haven't trained for anything better."
Valid point.
How can anyone complain about making minimum wage if they have no additional training or education? Am I saying minimum wage is enough to live on? No. But knowing that up front, people should do themselves a favor and try to acquire more skills, therefore opening up more employment doors.
Some people are leaders, others are worker bees. There's a need for both. But being a leader or worker bee isn't something that is pre-determined at birth. This fact is unique to the human race.
As I work with young people everyday, it is becoming increasingly difficult to help express this reality. Young people today are bombarded with examples of people who make a fortune doing "nothing". They can play a sport, look beautiful, are a child of a family of influence, and get paid millions for it.
What about the rest of us?
We will spend our adult lives seeking out a new reality for ourselves, and education and/or skill acquisition is the ticket. To expect to get paid a lot of money for just "being" is misguided.
As a world economy becomes globalized, humans from all parts of the world will be competing for the same jobs. The individual with the competitive edge: multi-lingual, speciality training, higher education, etc. will be the winners. Others who cannot compete will be left behind.
Is it possible to be dumb and useful? Yes. But why test that belief? Reach for a higher goal, go the extra distance, seek out new opportunities for yourself.
The world needs more leaders. Each of us has that potential, but few use it. I believe it is never too late. If you are unhappy with where you are in your life, do something different. There will always be barriers: money, time, family commitments.
But each of these can be overcome.
Goal setting is part of this process. But talk is cheap. A real commitment requires a solid action plan. Don't wait for others to tell you what to do. Find out what you need to do in order to maximize opportunities for yourself.
I know you can do this! You may be a worker bee today, but the potential is there for something more if you wish it. Humans beings are on top of the food chain for a reason!
