OKAY SO VANILLE. First things first, she is pretty much the most adorable person in Axel's life. I mean, Rox and Dem are cute an' all, but Vanille is all of that plus she's less socially awkward and derpy, which makes Axel like her even more. She's kind and sweet and down to earth, which is REALLY LIKE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR BECAUSE he's been so used to sticking out for himself for such a long time and having people like Vanille actually giving a shit about him is something that he still isn't really that used to yet. It was actually really easy for him to like her, almost too easy -- ARE YOU SURE YOU DIDN'T USE ATTRACT ON HIM WHEN HE WASN'T LOOKING B( -- but he kind of just writes it off as being part of her personality. Sometimes, he wonders why someone who's honestly nice and caring like her is associating herself with a cretin like him. orz
Vanille's the kind of gal that Axel wishes he had the qualifications to date; the kind of girl he'd spend time courting, picking her up at her house with a bouquet of roses and taking her to some nice restaurant and ending with a walk in the park or something. But IN HIS HEAD, those kinds of girls deserve someone who's got a heart of gold and who can, you know, actually give support and cherish and love. Axel, unfortunately, thinks he comes up short on the heart of gold part. He's not exactly the best crayon in the box and Vanille's one of the people that he thinks he isn't really worthy to do that with. And he knows that her and Fang are like soul mates or something so he can't compete with that. But this thinking would actually tend to lead someone into ignoring that person and... well, Axel kind of has abandonment issues, so cutting off ties with Vanille would be out of the question. So that's really... mostly why he shamelessly flirts with her all the time. 8( He's never really sure how to act around her, actually, but he's always had the strategy of: WHEN IN DOUBT, BE A DICK OR A DICK, but since he can't exactly bring himself to be a dick around her, flirting and affectionate teasing is the next best thing. Axel is no exception; after a while of playful flirting, she's able to take it in stride, kind of in an "oh you ♥" way, because they're friends, and friends play along with each other's jokes, right??? He's no Mr. Personality and he's definitely no saint, but she recognizes that he's not completely heartless (lol) either, and so long as he doesn't fuck things over with her or the people she cares about, she'll stick by him, maybe scold him or try to mother hen him at times. But he's her friend. That's that. She's not going anywhere for now. She cares about him, maybe more than most at Estrasia, because there's a part of her that kind of... feels like he needs someone looking out for him? The difference between him and Namine in that aspect is that HE wouldn't openly acknowledge it. He's cocky and devil-may-care at times, and while he's not an idiot and certainly not weak, Vanille still wants to be there to either drag him away by his ear or back him up should she find him provoking someone into a fight. She has fun with it, even teasing a little in return. In fact, she finds him rather charming?! He's a sweetheart when he wants to be, and if Vanille ever took her eyes off from Fang for like... three seconds and swung that way a little more, she'd probably have something of a babycrush on him. But she really loves him a lot platonically, which is the main focus of her feelings for him. Axel is very Important to her, and she would mafia for him in return.
