This weekend has been spent moving out of the apartment. I’d been preparing most of the month of January for this weekend, and I’ve spent a lot time preparing for it.
Saturday was the move of furniture and property out of the apartment. I had boasted about how uniform and smooth the move would be when talking it up to the people who would be helping me, so the onus was on me to make the move live up to the hype. I picked up the moving van (A rented Ford Econoline U-Haul from Lake City Mini Storage) and one of my movers (Geoff) who lived nearby around 10 AM and then drove down to the apartment from there, stopping by the house to pick up a Dolly.
The other two movers (Devin and Kevin) met me down at the apartment at 10:30. The first step was moving all of the furniture to storage into Kevin’s apartment (very generous, a free month of storage. Thanks!). Kevin and I drove over to his apartment and unloaded the furniture. Meanwhile Geoff and Devin moved all the boxes out of the apartment into a staging area in the Apartment Lobby.
They got finished moving the boxes before the furniture was moved, they were all waiting and ready to load boxes into the van. Everything else fit into the van, except one of the tables, which Devin hauled in his car. The only hitch was the fact that the tables didn’t fit with the rest of the furniture and had to be disassembled.
All of my personal effects, including the tables, are now stored in my parents’ garage. I’m surprised at just how much stuff I own and I’m now actively thinking of ways I can cut down on my stuff, although I seriously wonder if I’ll actually come to any solutions.
The move itself took 5 hours and was deemed by Kevin as the 2nd smoothest move he’d ever done (the smoothest was switching units in the same building. After returning the van I took everyone to Red Robin for dinner and then we had enough energy afterwards to hang out for 6 hours.
Today I went back and cleaned the empty apartment, taking about 3.5 hours (something like that, I really wasn’t keeping track.) I found places in the apartment that I hadn’t ever discovered while I was living there (that’s how thorough I was). I managed to clean the very dirty floor of the tub with vinegar and salt, but I wasn’t able to get the stove top totally clean. The final walk through is tomorrow at 1 PM.
The month of February will be spent at the parent’s. It’s going to be a little bit harder to get to work because the Thornton Creek Bridge is closing February 6th for reconstruction. I’ll have to walk over to Roosevelt to get down to work. Still, I’m glad to be done with this first part of my plan.
