Music has been on my mind a lot as of late. Not just drumming either. Although, drumming takes up a large portion of my musical thinking. I like to think of the bigger picture. Names of songs, the name of the band, the style I want to create, the emotion I want to convey, and the performance of a piece are all things I think about. I already have a band name in mind for when I find the right people.
One thing a lot of musicians like to do is play along with songs and learn them exactly or tweak certain parts a little to learn and develop their skills. I do this to an extent. I don't really focus on learning full songs, but I learn parts and I take that part and I run with it and get creative and come up with something that fits my style. I'm more about writing my own material than learning someone else's.
A few months ago I was working a gig as a Drum Tech and when the band took a break Demarcus (the guy I work for) was having a problem with his snare and asked me to fix it and jam for a little bit too. That was the first time I had played in a room with more than 4 people in it. I was incredibly nervous and it took me a while to shake it off and relax again. Next time, when I'm actually performing for an audience I will be much more prepared and skilled, so some of the anxiety won't be there, but I think it will just turn into excitement.
A few of my favorite bands are coming out with or have already come out with new records this year so that makes me happy too. Ruoska's and Russian Circles' new records have come out and I'm very satisfied with them, but Metallica's new album is coming out in September and most Importantly Rammstein's new album will be out this year, hopefully. I know they are going to do a North American tour on this album cycle so I plan on being front row center.
Have any of you been thinking about music recently? If so, what have you been thinking about specifically and how does it affect your life? Don't worry about a long comment if you have a lot to say. I'd rather you type a long interesting comment than one that is short and vague. You're my friends and I like to hear you tell me about what's going on in your life.
