SPN Anime DVD's

So, I got my Supernatural the Anime DVD's and we've been watching them. In the event y'all are not familiar with the genre - 'anime' is a type of Japanese animation, very stylized and often very mature. My daughter is a big anime fan so she was (if possible) more excited than I was to see Supernatural reimagined as anime.
Dean and Sam have been fashioned in the image of Jensen and Jared -- in anime style. It works pretty well, especially for Sam. The rest of the characters - like Bobby, Jessica, John,  & Missouri have been re-imagined to not resemble their live action counterparts. Bobby not looking (and sounding) like Jim Beaver was kinda jarring at first, but it still works. Jared has done Sam's voice for all episodes, but Jensen is only Dean on two (which I haven't gotten to yet). For me it really grounds the series to hear Jared. I'm so glad he did all the voice over. The voice actor for Dean is doing a pretty fair job with Dean's mannerisms (he's no Jensen but he's adequate).

But what's really awesome is the way they weave the familiar stories in with some 'new' episodes and switch stuff up so that even though I've seen the episodes in live action, there's something new to see in the Anime. Its like all new episodes of Supernatural!!!  Which is awesomecakes with a side of awesome sauce. :) Its a mix of S1 and S2 stories and the boys spend a lot of time in the Impala. She's really like another character.  Look at how familiar these 'shots' of the boys in the car are - the angles that they're drawn from and so on.  In the extra features the art director guy from Japan (I'm bad, I should remember his name) is a big fan of the series and it shows in how the scenes are recreated.
Dean has his ring and his amulet!!
Sam has his S1 hoodie.

And of course, because its S1 - Sammy is brooding and its all moody and really kinda cool. There are black shadows and eyelashes on the guys, both of which are -- so it says - very unusual for anime. (Couldn't prove it by me!) This is apparently the first time a TV show has ever been turned into an anime. Go Supernatural!!!
This one is from the 'Heart' episode -- the full moon and light and shadow are a big part of it.
Also fabulous are the little introductions which Jared and Jensen did for each of the anime episodes. They are just completely adorkable. Edited to add -( thanks jess! :))  there are a lot of neat details -- one of my favorites is that "Carry On My Wayward Son" is the theme song for the show.  It plays under the credits at the end. Also during the credits there are little sketches of Dean and Sam on the road and my favorite is one of Dean sitting on the roof of the Impala playing thigh guitar just like 'Eye of the Tiger'.  Awesome!! :D Anyway - I highly reccomend it!  Its a fun and very Supernatural related way to pass a bit of time during this interminable hellatus as we wait for S7 of the live action show. Thanks to Andreas for the screen cap images.
