Catching up

I talked to my sister today. It was good to hear from her. She's getting her long-sought breast reduction in December, which should help with her back pain tremendously. She's also itching to graduate and plans to come down to Houston after her recovery to talk to museums.

Unfortunately, she passed on some bad news. I had just talked to my mom a few days ago and she was excited. Word was that she was finally being recognized for her hard work at the hospital. Management promised that if the supervisor of the cath lab didn't resign voluntarily after they wrote her up, they would create a new position over her and give it to my mom.

Britt informed me that not only did the cath lab supervisor get a slap on the wrist and refuse to resign, her current boss refused to go along with the plan to give my mom a promotion. He insisted that he needed her to continue working under him and management caved. So, once again, my mom has been screwed over by her sexist asshole of a boss who takes credit for the things my mom does to keep her department running to cover his own laziness.

I really feel bad for my mom. Moving back to Arkansas was supposed to be her time. Instead, she's working for assholes who don't appreciate or reward her skill, she doesn't get to see her best friend, Leslie, because my mom's partner and Leslie can't stand each other, she doesn't get to see me or my sister as much because she's always working, she doesn't get to go on trips because she's always working, and (according to my sister) her relationship with her partner seems to be about as stable as her relationship with our dad was.

Jenn and I are looking at making Houston something of a permanent base for us. Now that Lockheed is doing the Orion project here, I have a BIG reason to stay. IN fact, I'm talking to friends at the company that might be able to help me get a summer graduate internship working ON Orion. I hope I can pull that off and turn it over into a job offer. For Jenn, the Texas Medical Center is the best in the world. I know she can find an awesome residency here doing something she wants to do. I'm getting antsy to finish school and go work, too. I'm starting to think that my graduate advisor has very different expectations for my career than I do... and, quite honestly, I'm a little bored.

We'll just see what happens.
