At a little corner down Tokyo street stands a small coffee shop. Everyday it would open at the same time by a part time working student, Yaotome Hikaru.

Hikaru whistles a happy tune as he unlocks the door to the cafe. Despite having to juggle school late at night, and working early in the morning, Hikaru was still a dedicated worker. So much that he was rewarded employee of the month countless of times.

As the door unlocked, the chime above it rang softly and by the time Hikaru had put all his stuff away, wore an apron and cleaned the place up a bit, he was whistling a different song. It was his nature to be happy. Of course, like every other human being, he had those moments where he would become sad but it was rare. This was one of the reasons why people around him loved him so much.

Hikaru yawned as he wiped down the last table, stretching his limbs. He knew he was overworking himself, yet he didn’t have the heart to leave this job. It was a part of his life now, the co-workers (who hadn’t arrived yet, they were always late), had become his friends and his boss was like his own brother.

He also loved the smell of coffee that always, always seemed to calm his senses, although he wasn’t really a drinker. The warm atmosphere of the coffee shop also pulled him in.

As he stood behind the coffee machine, Hikaru smiled widely, ready to grind the coffee beans. It had been his favourite activity. As weird as it seems, he liked the sound the machine produced because it, somehow, gave him a peace of mind.

Tapping his foot in rhythm with the grinding beans, the door bell suddenly chimed, indicating his first customer of the day.

Now this was what he loved the most about his job.

The customer stood in front of the counter, waiting to be served. Hikaru washed his hands and wiped them, ready to assist the customer with his trademark smile.

“Do you want your usual, sir?” Hikaru asked politely.

“Yes, please.”

Hikaru nodded, shifting behind the coffee makers, making the latte he always makes every morning for this very customer. In all honesty, Hikaru was actually infatuated by him. He was tall and good looking, he always dressed nicely and the scent he brought to the shop made Hikaru sigh in content.

Finishing the latte, Hikaru handed the cup towards the purchaser, their brushing hands sending tingles down Hikaru’s spine. In exchange, Hikaru received the exact amount of money, and cashed it in the register.

He was expecting the man to turn around, like he always did but instead, he took a sip of the latte in front of Hikaru, asking, “What do you put in this latte?”

“Excuse me?” Hikaru was utterly confused.

Looking around to see that there were no other customers yet, the man figured that he could have a conversation with Hikaru. “I’ve been to the other branches of this shop but somehow, the lattes I order are always different from the ones you make for me. Yours is much sweeter. Is there a secret ingredient you put?”

Hikaru merely chuckled, not answering the question.

“I see you don’t want to tell me. Okay, fine then. I won’t ever come to this place ever again.”

His chuckling stopped and Hikaru looked up to see the customer serious faced. He was about to say something when suddenly the man burst into laughter.

“You should have seen your face.” He wiped away the tears that had formed due to excessive laughing. “I was just kidding. I can never go a day without this place.” He looked around the shop, eyes sparkling and a small smile across his face. When he was done, he reverted his eyes back to Hikaru, extending out his free hand. “I’m Yabu Kota.”

Hesitantly, Hikaru shook it. “Yaotome Hikaru.”

“I know.” Yabu pointed to the badge on his apron, grinning in amusement when he saw Hikaru blush in embarrassment. “I’ve always wanted to get to know you, but time wouldn’t let me.”

Hikaru’s mouth did a little ‘o’ in surprise. He wasn’t the only one watching.

“I-” At that moment, the door bell rung, revealing a hoard of business men wanting their daily dose of caffeine.

“Ah, looks like you’ll be getting busy. Let’s meet up this weekend.” Without getting any approval from Hikaru, Yabu scribbled down his number on a piece of tissue paper before shoving it in Hikaru’s hand. “Call me.” He smiled, eyes crinkling in a way that sent flutters to Hikaru’s heart, before heading out the door.

Hikaru looked at the material in his hands, quickly chucking it away in his pockets when he heard the customers grumble. He gave out his trademark smile, only this time, it was bigger than usual.

Maybe he knew why the lattes he made for Yabu was sweeter. Maybe there was a secret ingredient.

Maybe...

It was love.

Fin.
