a/n: requested was any shinee/vixx pairing, and these two kind of just struck me to fit well together. their voices are just perfect.
Jaehwan looked at the clock above the door, a little sigh making its way past his plush lips. He’s been waiting for sixteen minutes already. Usually Jaehwan was more likely to be a little on the late side, but when his sunbaenim had given him time and place for their singing practice, Jaehwan hadn’t dared to come even slightly late.
When their manager had told him that SHINee’s Jonghyun had asked to sing a duet with him for one of the Christmas shows, he wasn’t sure if he had heard right. Jaehwan had just stared blankly at their manager, mouth so wide open that Hakyeon hadn’t been able to contain his joke about Jaehwan catching flies. And even then Jaehwan had been far too dazed to find anything to reply.
But as the ticking of the clock progressed, Jaehwan was starting to feel nervous. What if Jonghyun had changed his mind? What if he had found someone else, someone with a voice much better suited than him? Jaehwan started worrying his lower lip between his teeth, chipping at his nails as his thoughts progressed.
The more he thought about it, the more it didn’t make any sense that Jonghyun would want him out of all people. There were so many awesome voices in the industry, and with SHINee’s popularity, Jonghyun could chose anyone he wanted. And Jaehwan, although complimented here and there for his soulful voice, was just a small rookie next to people like Yesung, Younghwa, Hongki, heck, everyone. Why him?
Jaehwan’s reverie was interrupted by a low chuckle coming from the door, and when he lifted his eyes to see its origin, Jonghyun was standing with his back against the entrance, looking at him with a bemused expression. Jaehwan instantly sprang up and bowed in respect, his fingers a little damp as he pressed them against his thighs.
“You’re far better than you think, you know.” Jonghyun’s voice was warm and kind, succeeding in soothing Jaehwan’s slightly erratic thoughts. Though as he progressed the words, he couldn’t help but blush slightly.
“I- I was talking aloud, wasn’t I.” Jaehwan sighed deeply, a hand coming up behind his head in embarrassment. Jonghyun chuckled again, and something inside of Jaehwan flipped.
“Pretty much.” The elder made his way over from the door, extending one of his hands to a still slightly insecure Jaehwan. “Nice to meet you!”
Jaehwan looked at the extended hand for a second before complying, a shy laugh escaping his lips. “But sunbaenim, we’ve met before, you know…” He looked up at the blonde sheepishly. Jonghyun laughed good-heartedly.
“Oh, I know. I just thought, like, one on one, officially, not in a rush between schedules.” Jaehwan couldn’t help but smile at Jonghyun’s words. “Oh, and call me hyung. I’m not too fond of that entire respectful stuff in daily life.”
Jaehwan nodded to himself, probing the sound of Jonghyun’s name falling from his lips. He would lie if he said he didn’t like it a little bit.
Jonghyun smiled a little upon seeing Jaehwan getting used to the thought, before he went and sat down on the couch next to the younger.
“Okay, so I was thinking that we could maybe sing an english carol? I played with the thought of writing one, but we don’t really have enough time for that…” He flipped through the bunch of papers he was holding in his hands, and Jaehwan sat down next to him to look over the suggestions. He nodded at Jonghyun’s words. They surely didn’t have that much time on their hands.
“Which one would you like more? This one? Or more something like, uh…” the elder dismissed some of the papers, scattering them on the floor in the process. Jaehwan immediately bent down to pick them up while Jonghyun was aiming to do the same, the older’s fingers brushing over Jaehwan’s hand in the process.
Jaehwan felt a little shudder run down his spine at the contact, and he tried to keep his face straight. There was a little pause though in his movements before he resumed grabbing at the papers, and he could swear he felt Jonghyun’s gaze on his cheek.
Once Jaehwan had gathered the papers and handed them over, carefully, so any contact was out of the question, Jonghyun resumed his suggestions. Jaehwan was only halfway listening by now, looking intently at the papers in the other’s hand than at the man himself. He was sure that he could see a slight smirk on Jonghyun’s lips out of the corner of his eyes though, and just the thought was enough to make his cheeks flush red.
“Or do you happen to have an even better idea?”
Jonghyun looked at him fully now, trapping Jaehwan’s eyes with his own, giving him no chance to look away. The corners of his full lips were crooked up in open jest, eyes glittering with gentle mischief. Jaehwan gulped, and he had to think twice before trying to convince himself that Jonghyun was clearly, definitely, only talking about the carol.
