“To make it easy yet that is about it. So plants that have higher anthocyanin concentration than chlorophyll will appear ‘less’ green and ‘more’ purple to your eyes.”
“Okay but doesn’t the plant need chlorophyll in order to live?”
“Well you already are saying it, because a plants can’t live unless it perform photosynthesis. So if it didn’t also have chlorophyll it can’t live. But the plant lives because it also has a small portion of chlorophyll. If you take Persian shield for example that plants had purple leaves but the nerves of the leave are green. But with other plants where the leaves are purple our eyes just lack the ability to see that chlorophyll is there.”
“It is just as the thing with the color blue?”
“Yes somewhat because the color green is reflected byt less than the purple one, so we just don’t seem to see the green color.”

“So is there anywhere I might can find a plant with purple leaves?”
“There are a lot of places where you can find them, but I am afraid you won’t find them here.”
“But I really want to find one, Why can’t I find it here.”
“That is because the plant is not growing here.”
“It is not? Why?”
“It doesn’t have the right circumstances to grow here.”

This made it all more troublesome for Mikan as she really wanted to find a purple leave for her mother. Or more for her collection, is she would find one her collection would be complete in her eyes.
“Why do you want to find one so badly?”
“Well you see I have a red leave here, that one would represent you dad. And this yellow one would be my brother. And this orange one would be me. So I am missing one leave here the purple one, the one that would represent mom. I just thought about it, you can find all kinds of colors but not a purple one. It makes me feel sad because this way mom is left out.”

Akai gently put his hand on his daughter shoulder, “That is really sweet of you to say, I am sure your mother would appreciate the thought of it too. Because the most important thing you remembered.”
“Yes that is right.” Murasaki spoke smiling warmly at her daughters words. “You didn’t forget about me, and as long as I know you won’t forget about me, it is the best gift a mother could ever get.”

When the leaves had all fallen down the trees and it was now freezing outside, the whole family was sitting inside the leaving room. The heater was on and no one felt anything from the cold weather outside. They were heaving a small party, since it was Murasaki’s birthday.

Mikan had never forgetten the conversation she had with her dad in the forest and when it was time for everyone to give their present. Mikan was the first to jump up and walking out of the room up to her bed room where she pulled out a small plant from under her bed.

She walked proudly back into the livingroom where everybody was sitting, “Happy birthday mom.” She spoke as she handed over the small Persian shield plant to her.
