-Application-
Name: Jess
Nicknames: a lot of people call me by my last name, which I'm not sharing on "teh interweb"
Age: 24
Location: Illinois
Sexuality: straight

-What do you like about your friends/best friend?their blunt honesty, their passion, the fact that we can disagree and still adore each other, the ability to share a secret with just a glance across the room

-Would you rather have one close friend for the rest of your life or a group of friends?I prefer a group of friends. I always have several very close friends, and really it's better to have different people to go to about different sorts of things. I have two "best" friends that I talk to about everything, but I'd be lost without all the other wonderful people I love, too.

-What awesome traits do you have that should get you accepted into the community? I speak my mind, love those who prove themselves to me unconditionally, enjoy having a damn good time...I don't claim to be a unique snowflake or any of that, I am who I am. If you can't be happy with being a little average, then you're not going to be very happy with your life at all. Also, I love to write creative non-fiction and poetry and am attempting to get published, I want to be a piercer and I take in rescue rats if you're looking for out of the ordinary traits.
,
-What three communities are you most active in?
bodymods, ratsnospos, and _octopus_ before it was deleted :(

-If you could do anything to Flavor Flav, what would you do? ignore him, as I've been successfully doing for the past 24 years.

-If you could have wild sex with any person in the world, who would it be and where? Jason Schwartzman, though I'd prefer it not involve him shoving my face in the mud. I find the thought of sex in elevators pretty appealing, personally.

-If you could have dinner with any person, dead or alive, who would it be and why? I would love to have dinner with Hermann Hesse. I love his writing and really respect the stand he took against the German political regimes during the World Wars. He seemed a true troubled genius, plus I'd really like to chat with him about writing.

-If you could kill one person, celebrity or non-celebrity who would it be? Renee Zellwegger...mostly I just want her to stop making that "I just smelled a bad fart" face.

-If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? Half the joy of traveling is one's traveling companions. That said, I'd love to see my family's castle in Scotland.

-Favorite childhood memory: Walking in the woods behind our house with my mom. It's all gone now, but when I was a kid there was a field in the middle of it full of wildflowers that were taller than me, and we'd go out and walk through them just looking at them and trying to identify them, but never picking any. It felt like we were the only people in the world and that my mom was all mine during those walks.

-What are your views on...[pick five]

Self-mutilation- I used to, and I got over it. I can't personally hold it against anyone, no matter their reasons. We all have emotional and mental hurt that plague us from time to time and everyone deals with it differently. It makes me infintely sad that so many young people seem to do it to be "cool" though. It's not a game, it's a psychological condition that by no means should be treated as flippiantly as many do.

Gun Control-

Abortion: I personally prefer to avoid it though safe sex, but I have had friends that have had it done and at that point in their lives it was what was best for them. If someone is raped, they should by no means be forced to keep that child. If someone gets pregnant accidentally while using contraceptives and they do not want a child, then I think it's perfectly justifiable as well. Some people are not meant to be parents (or carry a child for health/mental reasons) and they shouldn't be condemned for their choice. If it's forced upon a woman or is used as a means of "birth control" I don't agree with it, however.

Internet dating: This is very much not for me because I simply can't trust someone I've met only online enough to let myself fall in love with them. I'm suspicious of guys who flirt with me online mostly becuase I don't know them personally; they could be feeding me any number of bullshit lines and I would never be the wiser. I have no problem with other people finding love in cyberspace, but caution is always necessary. It is pretty amazing that you can be continents away from someone and still find them and fall in love with them. That's not an opportunity we had even 20 years ago.

Substance abuse: Substance abuse is unfortunate, but I think a lot of people fall into it without even realizing what they're doing to begin with. I certainly like to have my fun on occasion, but without some degree of moderation the majority of the time I'd be a mess. I think that stands true for most everyone. Enjoying a drink or indulging in a drug on occasion happens, but doing so daily is usually a sign that something is wrong in one's life. Addiction is a disease just like many other mental disorders, and I don't always think it's necessarily the person's fault. Generally, it should be treated with compassion and support rather than condemnation.

The Death Penalty

"One nation under god" in the pledge of allegiance Growing up, I went to public school and we said the Pledge without the "under god" part. It was just "One nation, indivisible," so I don't really have any attachment to it personally. I'm not Christian, and even now when saying it I don't personally say those words, but I don't necessarily think it should be banned or made manditory. I think if the situation is a religious one, then certainly say under God, if it's not I'd guess it's up to the discretion of the person leading it. In general I prefer not to hear religious references in non-religious settings. My only concern is separation of church and state, and I do think the phrase walks a fine line in that context.

-What do you want to be when you "grow up", or if you are already grown up, what did you want to be when you were younger?: I went to college to be a theatre major (makeup design), but I've really "outgrown" it. It no longer seems a realistic career choice for me, and that's okay :)

-What is one of your hobbies that you really love and why? I love driving...it's rather an odd hobby, but just being on the open road and having that time alone to think is amazing. If I can help someone out by transporting rescue rats or such, all the better.

-Name three of your interests: my pet rats, body modification, the Tyburn gallows tree and Newgate prison

-Something you know now, that in retrospect, you wish you'd known "then" That love isn't a one-time deal and thinking as such is a sure-fire way to lose it.

-Inner most desires: to be loved and love in return, to change someone's life for the better, to put all of my heart and soul into what I choose to do with my life. My ultimate secret goal is to be referenced in a research bibliography, though!

-Describe yourself in 5 words: bold, perceptive, nomadic, sexual, loving

Top three books that you feel were written about you and why: I don't know if I can say they were written about ME, but I love them and they strongly influenced my life.

Book 1: Narcissus and Goldmund
Author: Hermann Hesse
Explanation: The nomadic lifestyle of Goldmund has always really influenced me. I want to be able to go out and do a number of things with my life and love a number of people and learn from it all while still having something solid to go back to. This book renewed my faith in being an "artist", and continues to do so whenever I read it.

Book 2: Slanky Poems
Author: Mike Doughty
Explanation: So many of these poems (and Doughty's songs) speak to my soul. The language he uses is done so effortlessly and so very much in his voice, and I want to be able to do that with my own writing. I also think I've had some similar experiences to him, and reading about them really made me feel like "if he could survive that, so can I."

Book 3: Waiting for Godot
Author: Samuel Beckett
Explanation: I just love this play so very, very much. I've gone through some dark times in my life personally (hasn't everyone) but Vladimir and Estragon's friendship has always been very inspiring to me. I'm also a fiend for absurdism.

Top five songs that make the soundtrack of your life and why

Song 1: The Farmer and the Nomad
Artist: Jayber Crow
Why: There's a line in this song "until then it's just the shifting grass, the open road" and since I spend so much of my time on the road it hits home. I also saw this band for the first time while visiting my sort of boyfriend and my grandfather when he was in the hospital after having a stroke, so it brings back a lot of emotional memories for me.

Song 2: The Part You Throw Away
Artist: Tom Waits
Why: This song is just beautiful. There's a line that's "time is just memory mixed in with desire" and it's rather become my personal mantra. Tom Waits is one of those singers that makes you feel the pain he felt when he was writing the song, and I adore that connection through music.

Song 3: Lives
Artist: Modest Mouse
Why: I used this song as the opening music for a show I directed ("Cold Water"). My lead actor and I put in so much passion and work and it was so fitting. It always reminds me of him and of the show.

Song 4: Passing Afternoon
Artist: Iron & Wine
Why: It's just beautiful. The first time I heard it I cried.

Song 5: Madeleine & Nine
Artist: Mike Doughty
Why: The first time I heard this song was on the way to New Years in Chicago with my ex-boyfriend several years ago. A few months later, we got to see him play it live after driving 7 hours to the venue. Now, my favorite rat girl is named after it and she's getting very, very old. It will always be my tribute to my precious Madeleine.

Top three movies you should have starred in and why: All the movies I really enjoy have male lead characters :/

Movie: Plunkett & Macleane
Why: I would have made a damn fine lady highwayman. This movie is, in general just sexy and funny and wonderful. I adore it.

Movie: Big Fish
Why: I'd love to travel and meet so many interesting people like Ed Bloom does in his journeys. I think the sort of nomadic lifestyle appeals to me specifically.

Movie: House of Flying Daggers
Why: I want to make out with Takeshi Kaneshiro, plain and simple.

-Do you consider yourself unique? Why? I'm an individual (everyone is), but I don't know that I'm necessarily unique. Everyone is different in some ways and everyone is pretty much the same in others. I like my life and how I'm living it now, so being "unique" isn't really all that important to me. Life is about enjoying it, not trying to be different.

-What are some characteristics you admire in yourself & why? I'm a great friend, to the point that I will go out of my way and sacrifice superficial things for their benefit. I'm artistic, which not only means I can design my own tattoos, but also that I can write, draw, knit and do numerous other things I enjoy without really having to put in tons of effort. Also, I've never been afraid to do things that are out of the ordinary or that other people don't believe I can do. It's never out of spite though, simply desire. Lastly, it is completely impossible for me to hold a grudge. I'm a terribly forgiving person, and this don't have the burden of hatred or hurt feelings very often.

-Are you tired of filling out this survey? I haven't gotten bored yet, so I guess not.

-Is it worth it? Who knows...it's passing the time :P

-If we give you no's, will you bitch and cry about it? If you do, do you care that we might ban you because you obviously didn't read the rules? Not so much. There are a lot of people in the world that I know in person who don't like me, I can't really be too distraught over people on the internet who barely know me not liking me.

-How did you hear about this community? I just stumbled across it, really.
